2^CAnd Joshua³⁰⁹¹ the son¹¹²¹ of Nun⁵¹²⁶ sent⁷⁹⁷¹ out of Shittim⁷⁸⁵¹ two⁸¹⁴⁷ men⁵⁸² to spy⁷²⁷⁰ secretly,²⁷⁹¹ saying,⁵⁵⁹ Go³²¹² view⁷²⁰⁰ the land,⁷⁷⁶ even Jericho.³⁴⁰⁵ And they went,³²¹² and came⁹³⁵ into an harlot's²¹⁸¹ house,^8021004 named⁸⁰³⁴ Rahab,⁷³⁴³ and lodged

² And it was told⁵⁵⁹ the king⁴⁴²⁸ of Jericho,³⁴⁰⁵ saying,⁵⁵⁹ Behold, there came⁹³⁵ men⁵⁸² in hither to night³⁹¹⁵ of the children¹¹²¹ of Israel³⁴⁷⁸ to search out²⁶⁵⁸ the country.

³ And the king⁴⁴²⁸ of Jericho³⁴⁰⁵ sent⁷⁹⁷¹ unto Rahab,⁷³⁴³ saying,⁵⁵⁹ Bring forth³³¹⁸ the men⁵⁸² that are come⁹³⁵ to thee, which are entered⁹³⁵ into thine house:¹⁰⁰⁴ for they be come⁹³⁵ to search out²⁶⁵⁸ all the country.

⁴ And the woman⁸⁰² took³⁹⁴⁷ the two⁸¹⁴⁷ men,⁵⁸² and hid⁶⁸⁴⁵ them, and said⁵⁵⁹ thus, There came⁹³⁵ men⁵⁸² unto me, but I wist³⁰⁴⁵ not whence

⁵ And it came to pass about the time of shutting⁵⁴⁶² of the gate,⁸¹⁷⁹ when it was dark,²⁸²² that the men⁵⁸² went out:³³¹⁸ whither the men⁵⁸² went¹⁹⁸⁰ I wot³⁰⁴⁵ not: pursue⁷²⁹¹ after³¹⁰ them quickly;⁴¹¹⁸ for ye shall overtake

⁶ But she had brought them up⁵⁹²⁷ to the roof¹⁴⁰⁶ of the house, and hid²⁹³⁴ them with the stalks⁶⁰⁸⁶ of flax,⁶⁵⁹³ which she had laid in order⁶¹⁸⁶ upon the roof.

⁷ And the men⁵⁸² pursued⁷²⁹¹ after³¹⁰ them the way¹⁸⁷⁰ to Jordan³³⁸³ unto the fords:⁴⁵⁶⁹ and as soon as they which pursued⁷²⁹¹ after³¹⁰ them were gone out,³³¹⁸ they shut⁵⁴⁶² the gate.

⁸ And before they were laid down,⁷⁹⁰¹ she came up⁵⁹²⁷ unto them upon the roof;

⁹ And she said⁵⁵⁹ unto the men,⁵⁸² I know³⁰⁴⁵ that the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ hath given⁵⁴¹⁴ you the land,⁷⁷⁶ and that your terror³⁶⁷ is fallen⁵³⁰⁷ upon us, and that all the inhabitants³⁴²⁷ of the land⁷⁷⁶ faint⁴¹²⁷ because

¹⁰ For we have heard⁸⁰⁸⁵ how the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ dried up³⁰⁰¹ the water⁴³²⁵ of the Red⁵⁴⁸⁸ sea³²²⁰ for you,⁶⁴⁴⁰ when ye came out³³¹⁸ of Egypt;⁴⁷¹⁴ and what ye did⁶²¹³ unto the two⁸¹⁴⁷ kings⁴⁴²⁸ of the Amorites,⁵⁶⁷ that were on the other side⁵⁶⁷⁶ Jordan,³³⁸³ Sihon⁵⁵¹¹ and Og,⁵⁷⁴⁷ whom ye utterly destroyed.

¹¹ And as soon as we had heard⁸⁰⁸⁵ these things, our hearts³⁸²⁴ did melt,⁴⁵⁴⁹ neither did there remain⁶⁹⁶⁵ any more courage⁷³⁰⁷ in any man,³⁷⁶ because⁶⁴⁴⁰ of you: for the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ your God,⁴³⁰ he is God⁴³⁰ in heaven⁸⁰⁶⁴ above,⁴⁶⁰⁵ and in earth

¹² Now therefore, I pray you, swear⁷⁶⁵⁰ unto me by the Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ since³⁵⁸⁸ I have shewed⁶²¹³ you kindness,²⁶¹⁷ that ye will also shew⁶²¹³ kindness²⁶¹⁷ unto my father's¹ house,¹⁰⁰⁴ and give⁵⁴¹⁴ me a true⁵⁷¹ token:

¹³ And that ye will save alive²⁴²¹ my father,¹ and my mother,⁵¹⁷ and my brethren,²⁵¹ and my sisters,²⁶⁹ and all that they have, and deliver⁵³³⁷ our lives⁵³¹⁵ from death.

¹⁴ And the men⁵⁸² answered⁵⁵⁹ her, Our life⁵³¹⁵ for yours,⁴¹⁹¹ if ye utter⁵⁰⁴⁶ not this our business.¹⁶⁹⁷ And it shall be, when the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ hath given⁵⁴¹⁴ us the land,⁷⁷⁶ that we will deal⁶²¹³ kindly²⁶¹⁷ and truly

¹⁵ Then she let them down³³⁸¹ by a cord²²⁵⁶ through¹¹⁵⁷ the window:²⁴⁷⁴ for her house¹⁰⁰⁴ was upon the town⁷⁰²³ wall,²³⁴⁶ and she dwelt³⁴²⁷ upon the wall.

^16C And she said⁵⁵⁹ unto them, Get³²¹² you to the mountain,²⁰²² lest the pursuers⁷²⁹¹ meet⁶²⁹³ you; and hide²²⁴⁷ yourselves there three⁷⁹⁶⁹ days,³¹¹⁷ until the pursuers⁷²⁹¹ be returned:⁷⁷²⁵ and afterward³¹⁰ may ye go³²¹² your way.

¹⁷ And the men⁵⁸² said⁵⁵⁹ unto her, We will be blameless⁵³⁵⁵ of this thine oath⁷⁶²¹ which thou hast made us swear.

^18C Behold, when we come⁹³⁵ into the land,⁷⁷⁶ thou shalt bind⁷¹⁹⁴ this line⁸⁶¹⁵ of scarlet⁸¹⁴⁴ thread²³³⁹ in the window²⁴⁷⁴ which thou didst let us down by:³³⁸¹ and thou shalt bring⁶²² thy father,¹ and thy mother,⁵¹⁷ and thy brethren,²⁵¹ and all thy father's¹ household,¹⁰⁰⁴ home

¹⁹ And it shall be, that whosoever⁸³⁴ shall go out³³¹⁸ of the doors¹⁸¹⁷ of thy house¹⁰⁰⁴ into the street,²³⁵¹ his blood¹⁸¹⁸ shall be upon his head,⁷²¹⁸ and we will be guiltless:⁵³⁵⁵ and whosoever shall be with thee in the house,¹⁰⁰⁴ his blood¹⁸¹⁸ shall be on our head,⁷²¹⁸ if any hand

²⁰ And if thou utter⁵⁰⁴⁶ this our business,¹⁶⁹⁷ then we will be quit⁵³⁵⁵ of thine oath⁷⁶²¹ which thou hast made us to swear.

²¹ And she said,⁵⁵⁹ According unto your words,¹⁶⁹⁷ so be it. And she sent them away,⁷⁹⁷¹ and they departed:³²¹² and she bound⁷¹⁹⁴ the scarlet⁸¹⁴⁴ line⁸⁶¹⁵ in the window.

²² And they went,³²¹² and came⁹³⁵ unto the mountain,²⁰²² and abode³⁴²⁷ there three⁷⁹⁶⁹ days,³¹¹⁷ until the pursuers⁷²⁹¹ were returned:⁷⁷²⁵ and the pursuers⁷²⁹¹ sought¹²⁴⁵ them throughout all the way,¹⁸⁷⁰ but found

²³ So the two⁸¹⁴⁷ men⁵⁸² returned,⁷⁷²⁵ and descended³³⁸¹ from the mountain,²⁰²² and passed over,⁵⁶⁷⁴ and came⁹³⁵ to Joshua³⁰⁹¹ the son¹¹²¹ of Nun,⁵¹²⁶ and told⁵⁶⁰⁸ him all things that befell

²⁴ And they said⁵⁵⁹ unto Joshua,³⁰⁹¹ Truly³⁵⁸⁸ the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ hath delivered⁵⁴¹⁴ into our hands³⁰²⁷ all the land;⁷⁷⁶ for even all the inhabitants³⁴²⁷ of the country⁷⁷⁶ do faint⁴¹²⁷ because

3^CAnd Joshua³⁰⁹¹ rose early⁷⁹²⁵ in the morning;¹²⁴² and they removed⁵²⁶⁵ from Shittim,⁷⁸⁵¹ and came⁹³⁵ to Jordan,³³⁸³ he and all the children¹¹²¹ of Israel,³⁴⁷⁸ and lodged³⁸⁸⁵ there before they passed over.

² And it came to pass after⁷⁰⁹⁷ three⁷⁹⁶⁹ days,³¹¹⁷ that the officers⁷⁸⁶⁰ went⁵⁶⁷⁴ through⁷¹³⁰ the host;

^3C And they commanded⁶⁶⁸⁰ the people,⁵⁹⁷¹ saying,⁵⁵⁹ When ye see⁷²⁰⁰ the ark⁷²⁷ of the covenant¹²⁸⁵ of the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ your God,⁴³⁰ and the priests³⁵⁴⁸ the Levites³⁸⁸¹ bearing⁵³⁷⁵ it, then ye shall remove⁵²⁶⁵ from your place,⁴⁷²⁵ and go¹⁹⁸⁰ after

^4C Yet there shall be a space⁷³⁵⁰ between you and it, about two thousand⁵⁰⁵ cubits⁵²⁰ by measure:⁴⁰⁶⁰ come not near⁷¹²⁶ unto it, that ye may know³⁰⁴⁵ the way¹⁸⁷⁰ by which ye must go:³²¹² for ye have not passed⁵⁶⁷⁴ this way¹⁸⁷⁰ heretofore.⁸⁵⁴³

^5C And Joshua³⁰⁹¹ said⁵⁵⁹ unto the people,⁵⁹⁷¹ Sanctify⁶⁹⁴² yourselves: for to morrow⁴²⁷⁹ the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ will do⁶²¹³ wonders⁶³⁸¹ among

^6C And Joshua³⁰⁹¹ spake⁵⁵⁹ unto the priests,³⁵⁴⁸ saying,⁵⁵⁹ Take up⁵³⁷⁵ the ark⁷²⁷ of the covenant,¹²⁸⁵ and pass over⁵⁶⁷⁴ before⁶⁴⁴⁰ the people.⁵⁹⁷¹ And they took up⁵³⁷⁵ the ark⁷²⁷ of the covenant,¹²⁸⁵ and went³²¹² before⁶⁴⁴⁰ the people.

^7C And the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ said⁵⁵⁹ unto Joshua,³⁰⁹¹ This day³¹¹⁷ will I begin²⁴⁹⁰ to magnify¹⁴³¹ thee in the sight⁵⁸⁶⁹ of all Israel,³⁴⁷⁸ that they may know³⁰⁴⁵ that, as I was with Moses,

⁸ And thou shalt command⁶⁶⁸⁰ the priests³⁵⁴⁸ that bear⁵³⁷⁵ the ark⁷²⁷ of the covenant,¹²⁸⁵ saying,⁵⁵⁹ When ye are come⁹³⁵ to the brink⁷⁰⁹⁷ of the water⁴³²⁵ of Jordan,³³⁸³ ye shall stand still⁵⁹⁷⁵ in Jordan.

⁹ And Joshua³⁰⁹¹ said⁵⁵⁹ unto the children¹¹²¹ of Israel,³⁴⁷⁸ Come hither,⁵⁰⁶⁶ and hear⁸⁰⁸⁵ the words¹⁶⁹⁷ of the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ your God.

^10C And Joshua³⁰⁹¹ said,⁵⁵⁹ Hereby ye shall know³⁰⁴⁵ that the living²⁴¹⁶ God⁴¹⁰ is among⁷¹³⁰ you, and that he will without fail³⁴²³ drive out³⁴²³ from before⁶⁴⁴⁰ you the Canaanites,³⁶⁶⁹ and the Hittites,²⁸⁵⁰ and the Hivites,²³⁴⁰ and the Perizzites,⁶⁵²² and the Girgashites,¹⁶²² and the Amorites,⁵⁶⁷ and the Jebusites.

^11C Behold, the ark⁷²⁷ of the covenant¹²⁸⁵ of the Lord¹¹³ of all the earth⁷⁷⁶ passeth over⁵⁶⁷⁴ before⁶⁴⁴⁰ you into Jordan.

¹² Now therefore take³⁹⁴⁷ you twelve^81476240 men³⁷⁶ out of the tribes⁷⁶²⁶ of Israel,³⁴⁷⁸ out of every²⁵⁹ tribe⁷⁶²⁶ a man.

^13C And it shall come to pass, as soon as the soles³⁷⁰⁹ of the feet⁷²⁷² of the priests³⁵⁴⁸ that bear⁵³⁷⁵ the ark⁷²⁷ of the Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ the Lord¹¹³ of all the earth,⁷⁷⁶ shall rest⁵¹¹⁷ in the waters⁴³²⁵ of Jordan,³³⁸³ that the waters⁴³²⁵ of Jordan³³⁸³ shall be cut off³⁷⁷² from the waters⁴³²⁵ that come down³³⁸¹ from above;⁴⁶⁰⁵ and they shall stand⁵⁹⁷⁵ upon an²⁵⁹ heap.

^14C And it came to pass, when the people⁵⁹⁷¹ removed⁵²⁶⁵ from their tents,¹⁶⁸ to pass over⁵⁶⁷⁴ Jordan,³³⁸³ and the priests³⁵⁴⁸ bearing⁵³⁷⁵ the ark⁷²⁷ of the covenant¹²⁸⁵ before⁶⁴⁴⁰ the people;

^15C And as they that bare⁵³⁷⁵ the ark⁷²⁷ were come⁹³⁵ unto Jordan,³³⁸³ and the feet⁷²⁷² of the priests³⁵⁴⁸ that bare⁵³⁷⁵ the ark⁷²⁷ were dipped²⁸⁸¹ in the brim⁷⁰⁹⁷ of the water,⁴³²⁵ (for Jordan³³⁸³ overfloweth⁴³⁹⁰ all his banks¹⁴¹⁵ all the time³¹¹⁷ of harvest,)

^16C That the waters⁴³²⁵ which came down³³⁸¹ from above⁴⁶⁰⁵ stood⁵⁹⁷⁵ and rose up⁶⁹⁶⁵ upon an²⁵⁹ heap⁵⁰⁶⁷ very³⁹⁶⁶ far⁷³⁶⁸ from the city⁵⁸⁹² Adam,¹²¹ that is beside⁶⁶⁵⁴ Zaretan:⁶⁸⁹¹ and those that came down³³⁸¹ toward the sea³²²⁰ of the plain,⁶¹⁶⁰ even the salt⁴⁴¹⁷ sea,³²²⁰ failed,⁸⁵⁵² and were cut off:³⁷⁷² and the people⁵⁹⁷¹ passed over⁵⁶⁷⁴ right against Jericho.

^17C And the priests³⁵⁴⁸ that bare⁵³⁷⁵ the ark⁷²⁷ of the covenant¹²⁸⁵ of the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ stood⁵⁹⁷⁵ firm³⁵⁵⁹ on dry ground²⁷²⁴ in the midst⁸⁴³² of Jordan,³³⁸³ and all the Israelites³⁴⁷⁸ passed over⁵⁶⁷⁴ on dry ground,²⁷²⁴ until all the people¹⁴⁷¹ were passed⁵⁶⁷⁴ clean⁸⁵⁵² over⁵⁶⁷⁴ Jordan.

4And it came to pass, when all the people¹⁴⁷¹ were clean⁸⁵⁵² passed over⁵⁶⁷⁴ Jordan,³³⁸³ that the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ spake⁵⁵⁹ unto Joshua,³⁰⁹¹ saying,

² Take³⁹⁴⁷ you twelve^81476240 men⁵⁸² out of the people,⁵⁹⁷¹ out of every²⁵⁹ tribe⁷⁶²⁶ a man,

³ And command⁶⁶⁸⁰ ye them, saying,⁵⁵⁹ Take⁵³⁷⁵ you hence out of the midst⁸⁴³² of Jordan,³³⁸³ out of the place where the priests'³⁵⁴⁸ feet⁷²⁷² stood⁴⁶⁷³ firm,³⁵⁵⁹ twelve^81476240 stones,⁶⁸ and ye shall carry them over⁵⁶⁷⁴ with you, and leave³²⁴⁰ them in the lodging place,⁴⁴¹¹ where ye shall lodge³⁸⁸⁵ this night.

⁴ Then Joshua³⁰⁹¹ called⁷¹²¹ the twelve^81476240 men,³⁷⁶ whom he had prepared³⁵⁵⁹ of the children¹¹²¹ of Israel,³⁴⁷⁸ out of every²⁵⁹ tribe⁷⁶²⁶ a man:

⁵ And Joshua³⁰⁹¹ said⁵⁵⁹ unto them, Pass over⁵⁶⁷⁴ before⁶⁴⁴⁰ the ark⁷²⁷ of the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ your God⁴³⁰ into the midst⁸⁴³² of Jordan,³³⁸³ and take ye up⁷³¹¹ every²⁵⁹ man³⁷⁶ of you a stone⁶⁸ upon his shoulder,⁷⁹²⁶ according unto the number⁴⁵⁵⁷ of the tribes⁷⁶²⁶ of the children¹¹²¹ of Israel:

^6C That this may be a sign²²⁶ among⁷¹³⁰ you, that when your children¹¹²¹ ask⁷⁵⁹² their fathers in time to come,⁴²⁷⁹ saying,⁵⁵⁹ What mean ye by these stones?

⁷ Then ye shall answer⁵⁵⁹ them, That the waters⁴³²⁵ of Jordan³³⁸³ were cut off³⁷⁷² before⁶⁴⁴⁰ the ark⁷²⁷ of the covenant¹²⁸⁵ of the Lord;³⁰⁶⁸ when it passed over⁵⁶⁷⁴ Jordan,³³⁸³ the waters⁴³²⁵ of Jordan³³⁸³ were cut off:³⁷⁷² and these stones⁶⁸ shall be for a memorial²¹⁴⁶ unto the children¹¹²¹ of Israel³⁴⁷⁸ for⁵⁷⁰⁴ ever.

⁸ And the children¹¹²¹ of Israel³⁴⁷⁸ did⁶²¹³ so as Joshua³⁰⁹¹ commanded,⁶⁶⁸⁰ and took up⁵³⁷⁵ twelve^81476240 stones⁶⁸ out of the midst⁸⁴³² of Jordan,³³⁸³ as the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ spake¹⁶⁹⁶ unto Joshua,³⁰⁹¹ according to the number⁴⁵⁵⁷ of the tribes⁷⁶²⁶ of the children¹¹²¹ of Israel,³⁴⁷⁸ and carried them over⁵⁶⁷⁴ with them unto the place where they lodged,⁴⁴¹¹ and laid them down

^9C And Joshua³⁰⁹¹ set up⁶⁹⁶⁵ twelve^81476240 stones⁶⁸ in the midst⁸⁴³² of Jordan,³³⁸³ in the place where the feet⁷²⁷² of the priests³⁵⁴⁸ which bare⁵³⁷⁵ the ark⁷²⁷ of the covenant¹²⁸⁵ stood:⁴⁶⁷³ and they are there unto this day.

¹⁰ For the priests³⁵⁴⁸ which bare⁵³⁷⁵ the ark⁷²⁷ stood⁵⁹⁷⁵ in the midst⁸⁴³² of Jordan,³³⁸³ until every thing¹⁶⁹⁷ was finished⁸⁵⁵² that the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ commanded⁶⁶⁸⁰ Joshua³⁰⁹¹ to speak¹⁶⁹⁶ unto the people,⁵⁹⁷¹ according to all that Moses⁴⁸⁷² commanded⁶⁶⁸⁰ Joshua:³⁰⁹¹ and the people⁵⁹⁷¹ hasted⁴¹¹⁶ and passed over.

¹¹ And it came to pass, when all the people⁵⁹⁷¹ were clean⁸⁵⁵² passed over,⁵⁶⁷⁴ that the ark⁷²⁷ of the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ passed over,⁵⁶⁷⁴ and the priests,³⁵⁴⁸ in the presence⁶⁴⁴⁰ of the people.

¹² And the children¹¹²¹ of Reuben,⁷²⁰⁵ and the children¹¹²¹ of Gad,¹⁴¹⁰ and half²⁶⁷⁷ the tribe⁷⁶²⁶ of Manasseh,⁴⁵¹⁹ passed over⁵⁶⁷⁴ armed²⁵⁷¹ before⁶⁴⁴⁰ the children¹¹²¹ of Israel,³⁴⁷⁸ as Moses⁴⁸⁷² spake

¹³ About forty⁷⁰⁵ thousand⁵⁰⁵ prepared²⁵⁰² for war⁶⁶³⁵ passed over⁵⁶⁷⁴ before⁶⁴⁴⁰ the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ unto battle,⁴⁴²¹ to the plains⁶¹⁶⁰ of Jericho.

^14C On that day³¹¹⁷ the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ magnified¹⁴³¹ Joshua³⁰⁹¹ in the sight⁵⁸⁶⁹ of all Israel;³⁴⁷⁸ and they feared³³⁷² him, as they feared³³⁷² Moses,⁴⁸⁷² all the days³¹¹⁷ of his life.

¹⁵ And the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ spake⁵⁵⁹ unto Joshua,³⁰⁹¹ saying,

¹⁶ Command⁶⁶⁸⁰ the priests³⁵⁴⁸ that bear⁵³⁷⁵ the ark⁷²⁷ of the testimony,⁵⁷¹⁵ that they come up⁵⁹²⁷ out of Jordan.

¹⁷ Joshua³⁰⁹¹ therefore commanded⁶⁶⁸⁰ the priests,³⁵⁴⁸ saying,⁵⁵⁹ Come ye up⁵⁹²⁷ out of Jordan.

^18C And it came to pass, when the priests³⁵⁴⁸ that bare⁵³⁷⁵ the ark⁷²⁷ of the covenant¹²⁸⁵ of the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ were come up⁵⁹²⁷ out of the midst⁸⁴³² of Jordan,³³⁸³ and the soles³⁷⁰⁹ of the priests'³⁵⁴⁸ feet⁷²⁷² were lifted up⁵⁴²³ unto the dry land,²⁷²⁴ that the waters⁴³²⁵ of Jordan³³⁸³ returned⁷⁷²⁵ unto their place,⁴⁷²⁵ and flowed³²¹² over all his banks,¹⁴¹⁵ as⁸⁵⁴³ they did before.

^19C And the people⁵⁹⁷¹ came up⁵⁹²⁷ out of Jordan³³⁸³ on the tenth⁶²¹⁸ day of the first⁷²²³ month,²³²⁰ and encamped²⁵⁸³ in Gilgal,¹⁵³⁷ in the east⁴²¹⁷ border⁷⁰⁹⁷ of Jericho.

^20C And those twelve^81476240 stones,⁶⁸ which they took out³⁹⁴⁷ of Jordan,³³⁸³ did Joshua³⁰⁹¹ pitch⁶⁹⁶⁵ in Gilgal.

²¹ And he spake⁵⁵⁹ unto the children¹¹²¹ of Israel,³⁴⁷⁸ saying,⁵⁵⁹ When your children¹¹²¹ shall ask⁷⁵⁹² their fathers¹ in time to come,⁴²⁷⁹ saying,⁵⁵⁹ What mean these stones?

²² Then ye shall let your children¹¹²¹ know,³⁰⁴⁵ saying,⁵⁵⁹ Israel³⁴⁷⁸ came over⁵⁶⁷⁴ this Jordan³³⁸³ on dry land.

²³ For the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ your God⁴³⁰ dried up³⁰⁰¹ the waters⁴³²⁵ of Jordan³³⁸³ from before⁶⁴⁴⁰ you, until ye were passed over,⁵⁶⁷⁴ as the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ your God⁴³⁰ did⁶²¹³ to the Red⁵⁴⁸⁸ sea,³²²⁰ which he dried up³⁰⁰¹ from before⁶⁴⁴⁰ us, until we were gone over:

²⁴ That all the people⁵⁹⁷¹ of the earth⁷⁷⁶ might know³⁰⁴⁵ the hand³⁰²⁷ of the Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ that it is mighty:²³⁸⁹ that ye might fear³³⁷² the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ your God⁴³⁰ for ever.

5And it came to pass, when all the kings⁴⁴²⁸ of the Amorites,⁵⁶⁷ which were on the side⁵⁶⁷⁶ of Jordan³³⁸³ westward,³²²⁰ and all the kings⁴⁴²⁸ of the Canaanites,³⁶⁶⁹ which were by the sea,³²²⁰ heard⁸⁰⁸⁵ that the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ had dried up³⁰⁰¹ the waters⁴³²⁵ of Jordan³³⁸³ from before⁶⁴⁴⁰ the children¹¹²¹ of Israel,³⁴⁷⁸ until we were passed over,⁵⁶⁷⁴ that their heart³⁸²⁴ melted,⁴⁵⁴⁹ neither was there spirit⁷³⁰⁷ in them any more, because⁶⁴⁴⁰ of the children¹¹²¹ of Israel.

² At that time⁶²⁵⁶ the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ said⁵⁵⁹ unto Joshua,³⁰⁹¹ Make⁶²¹³ thee sharp⁶⁶⁹⁷ knives,²⁷¹⁹ and circumcise⁴¹³⁵ again⁷⁷²⁵ the children¹¹²¹ of Israel³⁴⁷⁸ the second time.

^3C And Joshua³⁰⁹¹ made⁶²¹³ him sharp⁶⁶⁹⁷ knives,²⁷¹⁹ and circumcised⁴¹³⁵ the children¹¹²¹ of Israel³⁴⁷⁸ at the hill¹³⁸⁹ of the foreskins.

⁴ And this is the cause¹⁶⁹⁷ why Joshua³⁰⁹¹ did circumcise:⁴¹³⁵ All the people⁵⁹⁷¹ that came out³³¹⁸ of Egypt,⁴⁷¹⁴ that were males,²¹⁴⁵ even all the men⁵⁸² of war,⁴⁴²¹ died⁴¹⁹¹ in the wilderness⁴⁰⁵⁷ by the way,¹⁸⁷⁰ after they came out³³¹⁸ of Egypt.

⁵ Now³⁵⁸⁸ all the people⁵⁹⁷¹ that came out³³¹⁸ were circumcised:⁴¹³⁵ but all the people⁵⁹⁷¹ that were born³²⁰⁹ in the wilderness⁴⁰⁵⁷ by the way¹⁸⁷⁰ as they came forth³³¹⁸ out of Egypt,⁴⁷¹⁴ them they had not circumcised.

^6C For the children¹¹²¹ of Israel³⁴⁷⁸ walked¹⁹⁸⁰ forty⁷⁰⁵ years⁸¹⁴¹ in the wilderness,⁴⁰⁵⁷ till all the people¹⁴⁷¹ that were men⁵⁸² of war,⁴⁴²¹ which came out³³¹⁸ of Egypt,⁴⁷¹⁴ were consumed,⁸⁵⁵² because they obeyed⁸⁰⁸⁵ not the voice⁶⁹⁶³ of the Lord:³⁰⁶⁸ unto whom the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ sware⁷⁶⁵⁰ that he would not shew⁷²⁰⁰ them the land,⁷⁷⁶ which the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ sware⁷⁶⁵⁰ unto their fathers¹ that he would give⁵⁴¹⁴ us, a land⁷⁷⁶ that floweth²¹⁰⁰ with milk²⁴⁶¹ and honey.

^7C And their children,¹¹²¹ whom he raised up⁶⁹⁶⁵ in their stead, them Joshua³⁰⁹¹ circumcised:⁴¹³⁵ for they were uncircumcised,⁶¹⁸⁹ because they had not circumcised⁴¹³⁵ them by the way.

⁸ And it came to pass, when they had done⁸⁵⁵² circumcising⁴¹³⁵ all the people,¹⁴⁷¹ that they abode³⁴²⁷ in their places in the camp,⁴²⁶⁴ till they were whole.

⁹ And the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ said⁵⁵⁹ unto Joshua,³⁰⁹¹ This day³¹¹⁷ have I rolled away¹⁵⁵⁶ the reproach²⁷⁸¹ of Egypt⁴⁷¹⁴ from off you. Wherefore the name⁸⁰³⁴ of the place⁴⁷²⁵ is called⁷¹²¹ Gilgal¹⁵³⁷ unto this day.

^10C And the children¹¹²¹ of Israel³⁴⁷⁸ encamped²⁵⁸³ in Gilgal,¹⁵³⁷ and kept⁶²¹³ the passover⁶⁴⁵³ on the fourteenth^7026240 day³¹¹⁷ of the month²³²⁰ at even⁶¹⁵³ in the plains⁶¹⁶⁰ of Jericho.

^11C And they did eat³⁹⁸ of the old corn⁵⁶⁶⁹ of the land⁷⁷⁶ on the morrow⁴²⁸³ after the passover,⁶⁴⁵³ unleavened cakes,⁴⁶⁸² and parched⁷⁰³³ corn in the selfsame⁶¹⁰⁶ day.

^12C And the manna⁴⁴⁷⁸ ceased⁷⁶⁷³ on the morrow⁴²⁸³ after they had eaten³⁹⁸ of the old corn⁵⁶⁶⁹ of the land;⁷⁷⁶ neither had the children¹¹²¹ of Israel³⁴⁷⁸ manna⁴⁴⁷⁸ any more; but they did eat³⁹⁸ of the fruit⁸³⁹³ of the land⁷⁷⁶ of Canaan³⁶⁶⁷ that year.

¹³ And it came to pass, when Joshua³⁰⁹¹ was by Jericho,³⁴⁰⁵ that he lifted up⁵³⁷⁵ his eyes⁵⁸⁶⁹ and looked,⁷²⁰⁰ and, behold, there stood⁵⁹⁷⁵ a man³⁷⁶ over against him with his sword²⁷¹⁹ drawn⁸⁰²⁵ in his hand:³⁰²⁷ and Joshua³⁰⁹¹ went³²¹² unto him, and said⁵⁵⁹ unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries?

^14C And he said,⁵⁵⁹ Nay; but as captain⁸²⁶⁹ of the host⁶⁶³⁵ of the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ am I now come.⁹³⁵ And Joshua³⁰⁹¹ fell⁵³⁰⁷ on his face⁶⁴⁴⁰ to the earth,⁷⁷⁶ and did worship,⁷⁸¹² and said⁵⁵⁹ unto him, What saith¹⁶⁹⁶ my lord¹¹³ unto his servant?

¹⁵ And the captain⁸²⁶⁹ of the Lord’s³⁰⁶⁸ host⁶⁶³⁵ said⁵⁵⁹ unto Joshua,³⁰⁹¹ Loose⁵³⁹⁴ thy shoe⁵²⁷⁵ from off thy foot;⁷²⁷² for the place⁴⁷²⁵ whereon thou standest⁵⁹⁷⁵ is holy.⁶⁹⁴⁴ And Joshua³⁰⁹¹ did

6^CNow Jericho³⁴⁰⁵ was straitly⁵⁴⁶² shut up⁵⁴⁶² because⁶⁴⁴⁰ of the children¹¹²¹ of Israel:³⁴⁷⁸ none went out,³³¹⁸ and none came in.

^2C And the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ said⁵⁵⁹ unto Joshua,³⁰⁹¹ See,⁷²⁰⁰ I have given⁵⁴¹⁴ into thine hand³⁰²⁷ Jericho,³⁴⁰⁵ and the king⁴⁴²⁸ thereof, and the mighty men¹³⁶⁸ of valour.

³ And ye shall compass⁵⁴³⁷ the city,⁵⁸⁹² all ye men⁵⁸² of war,⁴⁴²¹ and go round about⁵³⁶² the city⁵⁸⁹² once.^6471259 Thus shalt thou do⁶²¹³ six⁸³³⁷ days.

^4C And seven⁷⁶⁵¹ priests³⁵⁴⁸ shall bear⁵³⁷⁵ before⁶⁴⁴⁰ the ark⁷²⁷ seven⁷⁶⁵¹ trumpets⁷⁷⁸² of rams' horns:³¹⁰⁴ and the seventh⁷⁶³⁷ day³¹¹⁷ ye shall compass⁵⁴³⁷ the city⁵⁸⁹² seven⁷⁶⁵¹ times,⁶⁴⁷¹ and the priests³⁵⁴⁸ shall blow⁸⁶²⁸ with the trumpets.

^5C And it shall come to pass, that when they make a long⁴⁹⁰⁰ blast with the ram's³¹⁰⁴ horn,⁷¹⁶¹ and when ye hear⁸⁰⁸⁵ the sound⁶⁹⁶³ of the trumpet,⁷⁷⁸² all the people⁵⁹⁷¹ shall shout⁷³²¹ with a great¹⁴¹⁹ shout;⁸⁶⁴³ and the wall²³⁴⁶ of the city⁵⁸⁹² shall fall down⁵³⁰⁷ flat,⁸⁴⁷⁸ and the people⁵⁹⁷¹ shall ascend up⁵⁹²⁷ every man

⁶ And Joshua³⁰⁹¹ the son¹¹²¹ of Nun⁵¹²⁶ called⁷¹²¹ the priests,³⁵⁴⁸ and said⁵⁵⁹ unto them, Take up⁵³⁷⁵ the ark⁷²⁷ of the covenant,¹²⁸⁵ and let seven⁷⁶⁵¹ priests³⁵⁴⁸ bear⁵³⁷⁵ seven⁷⁶⁵¹ trumpets⁷⁷⁸² of rams' horns³¹⁰⁴ before⁶⁴⁴⁰ the ark⁷²⁷ of the Lord.

⁷ And he said⁵⁵⁹ unto the people,⁵⁹⁷¹ Pass on,⁵⁶⁷⁴ and compass⁵⁴³⁷ the city,⁵⁸⁹² and let him that is armed²⁵⁰² pass on⁵⁶⁷⁴ before⁶⁴⁴⁰ the ark⁷²⁷ of the Lord.

⁸ And it came to pass, when Joshua³⁰⁹¹ had spoken⁵⁵⁹ unto the people,⁵⁹⁷¹ that the seven⁷⁶⁵¹ priests³⁵⁴⁸ bearing⁵³⁷⁵ the seven⁷⁶⁵¹ trumpets⁷⁷⁸² of rams' horns³¹⁰⁴ passed on⁵⁶⁷⁴ before⁶⁴⁴⁰ the Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ and blew⁸⁶²⁸ with the trumpets:⁷⁷⁸² and the ark⁷²⁷ of the covenant¹²⁸⁵ of the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ followed¹⁹⁸⁰ them.

⁹ And the armed²⁵⁰² men went¹⁹⁸⁰ before⁶⁴⁴⁰ the priests³⁵⁴⁸ that blew^86288628 with the trumpets,⁷⁷⁸² and the rereward⁶²² came¹⁹⁸⁰ after³¹⁰ the ark,⁷²⁷ the priests going on,¹⁹⁸⁰ and blowing⁸⁶²⁸ with the trumpets.

¹⁰ And Joshua³⁰⁹¹ had commanded⁶⁶⁸⁰ the people,⁵⁹⁷¹ saying,⁵⁵⁹ Ye shall not shout,⁷³²¹ nor make any noise⁸⁰⁸⁵ with your voice,⁶⁹⁶³ neither shall any word¹⁶⁹⁷ proceed³³¹⁸ out of your mouth,⁶³¹⁰ until the day³¹¹⁷ I bid⁵⁵⁹ you shout;⁷³²¹ then shall ye shout.

¹¹ So the ark⁷²⁷ of the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ compassed⁵⁴³⁷ the city,⁵⁸⁹² going about⁵³⁶² it once:^6471259 and they came⁹³⁵ into the camp,⁴²⁶⁴ and lodged³⁸⁸⁵ in the camp.

¹² And Joshua³⁰⁹¹ rose early⁷⁹²⁵ in the morning,¹²⁴² and the priests³⁵⁴⁸ took up⁵³⁷⁵ the ark⁷²⁷ of the Lord.

¹³ And seven⁷⁶⁵¹ priests³⁵⁴⁸ bearing⁵³⁷⁵ seven⁷⁶⁵¹ trumpets⁷⁷⁸² of rams' horns³¹⁰⁴ before⁶⁴⁴⁰ the ark⁷²⁷ of the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ went on¹⁹⁸⁰ continually,¹⁹⁸⁰ and blew⁸⁶²⁸ with the trumpets:⁷⁷⁸² and the armed men²⁵⁰² went¹⁹⁸⁰ before⁶⁴⁴⁰ them; but the rereward⁶²² came¹⁹⁸⁰ after³¹⁰ the ark⁷²⁷ of the Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ the priests going on,¹⁹⁸⁰ and blowing⁸⁶²⁸ with the trumpets.

^14C And the second⁸¹⁴⁵ day³¹¹⁷ they compassed⁵⁴³⁷ the city⁵⁸⁹² once,^6471259 and returned⁷⁷²⁵ into the camp:⁴²⁶⁴ so they did⁶²¹³ six⁸³³⁷ days.

^15C And it came to pass on the seventh⁷⁶³⁷ day,³¹¹⁷ that they rose early⁷⁹²⁵ about the dawning⁵⁹²⁷ of the day,⁷⁸³⁷ and compassed⁵⁴³⁷ the city⁵⁸⁹² after the same manner⁴⁹⁴¹ seven⁷⁶⁵¹ times:⁶⁴⁷¹ only on that day³¹¹⁷ they compassed⁵⁴³⁷ the city⁵⁸⁹² seven⁷⁶⁵¹ times.

^16C And it came to pass at the seventh⁷⁶³⁷ time,⁶⁴⁷¹ when the priests³⁵⁴⁸ blew⁸⁶²⁸ with the trumpets,⁷⁷⁸² Joshua³⁰⁹¹ said⁵⁵⁹ unto the people,⁵⁹⁷¹ Shout;⁷³²¹ for the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ hath given⁵⁴¹⁴ you the city.

¹⁷ And the city⁵⁸⁹² shall be accursed,²⁷⁶⁴ even it, and all that are therein, to the Lord:³⁰⁶⁸ only Rahab⁷³⁴³ the harlot²¹⁸¹ shall live,²⁴²¹ she and all that are with her in the house,¹⁰⁰⁴ because she hid²²⁴⁴ the messengers⁴³⁹⁷ that we sent.

¹⁸ And ye, in any wise⁷⁵³⁵ keep⁸¹⁰⁴ yourselves from the accursed thing,²⁷⁶⁴ lest ye make yourselves accursed,²⁷⁶³ when ye take³⁹⁴⁷ of the accursed thing,²⁷⁶⁴ and make⁷⁷⁶⁰ the camp⁴²⁶⁴ of Israel³⁴⁷⁸ a curse,²⁷⁶⁴ and trouble

^19C But all the silver,³⁷⁰¹ and gold,²⁰⁹¹ and vessels³⁶²⁷ of brass⁵¹⁷⁸ and iron,¹²⁷⁰ are consecrated⁶⁹⁴⁴ unto the Lord:³⁰⁶⁸ they shall come⁹³⁵ into the treasury²¹⁴ of the Lord.

^20C So the people⁵⁹⁷¹ shouted⁷³²¹ when the priests blew⁸⁶²⁸ with the trumpets:⁷⁷⁸² and it came to pass, when the people⁵⁹⁷¹ heard⁸⁰⁸⁵ the sound⁶⁹⁶³ of the trumpet,⁷⁷⁸² and the people⁵⁹⁷¹ shouted⁷³²¹ with a great¹⁴¹⁹ shout,⁸⁶⁴³ that the wall²³⁴⁶ fell down flat,⁵³⁰⁷ so that the people⁵⁹⁷¹ went up⁵⁹²⁷ into the city,⁵⁸⁹² every man³⁷⁶ straight before him, and they took³⁹²⁰ the city.

^21C And they utterly destroyed²⁷⁶³ all that was in the city,⁵⁸⁹² both man³⁷⁶ and woman,⁸⁰² young⁵²⁸⁸ and old,²²⁰⁵ and ox,⁷⁷⁹⁴ and sheep,⁷⁷¹⁶ and ass,²⁵⁴³ with the edge⁶³¹⁰ of the sword.

²² But Joshua³⁰⁹¹ had said⁵⁵⁹ unto the two⁸¹⁴⁷ men⁵⁸² that had spied out⁷²⁷⁰ the country,⁷⁷⁶ Go⁹³⁵ into the harlot's²¹⁸¹ house,¹⁰⁰⁴ and bring out³³¹⁸ thence the woman,⁸⁰² and all that she hath, as ye sware

²³ And the young men⁵²⁸⁸ that were spies⁷²⁷⁰ went in,⁹³⁵ and brought out³³¹⁸ Rahab,⁷³⁴³ and her father,¹ and her mother,⁵¹⁷ and her brethren,²⁵¹ and all that she had; and they brought out³³¹⁸ all her kindred,⁴⁹⁴⁰ and left³²⁴⁰ them without²³⁵¹ the camp⁴²⁶⁴ of Israel.

^24C And they burnt⁸³¹³ the city⁵⁸⁹² with fire,⁷⁸⁴ and all that was therein: only the silver,³⁷⁰¹ and the gold,²⁰⁹¹ and the vessels³⁶²⁷ of brass⁵¹⁷⁸ and of iron,¹²⁷⁰ they put⁵⁴¹⁴ into the treasury²¹⁴ of the house¹⁰⁰⁴ of the Lord.

^25C And Joshua³⁰⁹¹ saved²⁴²¹ Rahab⁷³⁴³ the harlot²¹⁸¹ alive,²⁴²¹ and her father's¹ household,¹⁰⁰⁴ and all that she had; and she dwelleth³⁴²⁷ in⁷¹³⁰ Israel³⁴⁷⁸ even unto this day;³¹¹⁷ because she hid²²⁴⁴ the messengers,⁴³⁹⁷ which Joshua³⁰⁹¹ sent⁷⁹⁷¹ to spy out⁷²⁷⁰ Jericho.

²⁶ And Joshua³⁰⁹¹ adjured⁷⁶⁵⁰ them at that time,⁶²⁵⁶ saying,⁵⁵⁹ Cursed⁷⁷⁹ be the man³⁷⁶ before⁶⁴⁴⁰ the Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ that riseth up⁶⁹⁶⁵ and buildeth¹¹²⁹ this city⁵⁸⁹² Jericho:³⁴⁰⁵ he shall lay the foundation³²⁴⁵ thereof in his firstborn,¹⁰⁶⁰ and in his youngest⁶⁸¹⁰ son shall he set up⁵³²⁴ the gates

²⁷ So the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ was with Joshua;³⁰⁹¹ and his fame⁸⁰⁸⁹ was noised throughout all the country.

7^CBut the children¹¹²¹ of Israel³⁴⁷⁸ committed⁴⁶⁰³ a trespass⁴⁶⁰⁴ in the accursed thing:²⁷⁶⁴ for Achan,⁵⁹¹² the son¹¹²¹ of Carmi,³⁷⁵⁶ the son¹¹²¹ of Zabdi,²⁰⁶⁷ the son¹¹²¹ of Zerah,²²²⁶ of the tribe⁴²⁹⁴ of Judah,³⁰⁶³ took³⁹⁴⁷ of the accursed thing:²⁷⁶⁴ and the anger⁶³⁹ of the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ was kindled²⁷³⁴ against the children¹¹²¹ of Israel.

² And Joshua³⁰⁹¹ sent⁷⁹⁷¹ men⁵⁸² from Jericho³⁴⁰⁵ to Ai,⁵⁸⁵⁷ which is beside⁵⁹⁷³ Bethaven,¹⁰⁰⁷ on the east side⁶⁹²⁴ of Bethel,¹⁰⁰⁸ and spake⁵⁵⁹ unto them, saying,⁵⁵⁹ Go up⁵⁹²⁷ and view⁷²⁷⁰ the country.⁷⁷⁶ And the men⁵⁸² went up⁵⁹²⁷ and viewed⁷²⁷⁰ Ai.

^3C And they returned⁷⁷²⁵ to Joshua,³⁰⁹¹ and said⁵⁵⁹ unto him, Let not all the people⁵⁹⁷¹ go up;⁵⁹²⁷ but let about two or three⁷⁹⁶⁹ thousand⁵⁰⁵ men³⁷⁶ go up⁵⁹²⁷ and smite⁵²²¹ Ai;⁵⁸⁵⁷ and make not all the people⁵⁹⁷¹ to labour³⁰²¹ thither; for they are but few.

⁴ So there went up⁵⁹²⁷ thither of the people⁵⁹⁷¹ about three⁷⁹⁶⁹ thousand⁵⁰⁵ men:³⁷⁶ and they fled⁵¹²⁷ before⁶⁴⁴⁰ the men⁵⁸² of Ai.

⁵ And the men⁵⁸² of Ai⁵⁸⁵⁷ smote⁵²²¹ of them about thirty⁷⁹⁷⁰ and six⁸³³⁷ men:³⁷⁶ for they chased⁷²⁹¹ them from before⁶⁴⁴⁰ the gate⁸¹⁷⁹ even unto Shebarim,⁷⁶⁷¹ and smote⁵²²¹ them in the going down:⁴¹⁷⁴ wherefore the hearts³⁸²⁴ of the people⁵⁹⁷¹ melted,⁴⁵⁴⁹ and became as water.

⁶ And Joshua³⁰⁹¹ rent⁷¹⁶⁷ his clothes,⁸⁰⁷¹ and fell⁵³⁰⁷ to the earth⁷⁷⁶ upon his face⁶⁴⁴⁰ before⁶⁴⁴⁰ the ark⁷²⁷ of the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ until the eventide,⁶¹⁵³ he and the elders²²⁰⁵ of Israel,³⁴⁷⁸ and put⁵⁹²⁷ dust⁶⁰⁸³ upon their heads.

⁷ And Joshua³⁰⁹¹ said,⁵⁵⁹ Alas, O¹⁶² Lord¹³⁶ God,³⁰⁶⁹ wherefore hast thou at all⁵⁶⁷⁴ brought⁵⁶⁷⁴ this people⁵⁹⁷¹ over⁵⁶⁷⁴ Jordan,³³⁸³ to deliver⁵⁴¹⁴ us into the hand³⁰²⁷ of the Amorites,⁵⁶⁷ to destroy⁶ us? would to God³⁸⁶³ we had been content,²⁹⁷⁴ and dwelt³⁴²⁷ on the other side⁵⁶⁷⁶ Jordan!

⁸ O⁹⁹⁴ Lord,¹³⁶ what shall I say,⁵⁵⁹ when³¹⁰ Israel³⁴⁷⁸ turneth²⁰¹⁵ their backs⁶²⁰³ before⁶⁴⁴⁰ their enemies!

^9C For the Canaanites³⁶⁶⁹ and all the inhabitants³⁴²⁷ of the land⁷⁷⁶ shall hear⁸⁰⁸⁵ of it, and shall environ us round,⁵⁴³⁷ and cut off³⁷⁷² our name⁸⁰³⁴ from the earth:⁷⁷⁶ and what wilt thou do⁶²¹³ unto thy great¹⁴¹⁹ name?

¹⁰ And the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ said⁵⁵⁹ unto Joshua,³⁰⁹¹ Get thee up;⁶⁹⁶⁵ wherefore liest⁵³⁰⁷ thou thus upon thy face?

^11C Israel³⁴⁷⁸ hath sinned,²³⁹⁸ and they have also transgressed⁵⁶⁷⁴ my covenant¹²⁸⁵ which I commanded⁶⁶⁸⁰ them: for they have even taken³⁹⁴⁷ of the accursed thing,²⁷⁶⁴ and have also stolen,¹⁵⁸⁹ and dissembled³⁵⁸⁴ also, and they have put⁷⁷⁶⁰ it even among their own stuff.

¹² Therefore the children¹¹²¹ of Israel³⁴⁷⁸ could³²⁰¹ not stand⁶⁹⁶⁵ before⁶⁴⁴⁰ their enemies,³⁴¹ but turned⁶⁴³⁷ their backs⁶²⁰³ before⁶⁴⁴⁰ their enemies,³⁴¹ because they were accursed:²⁷⁶⁴ neither will I be with you any more,³²⁵⁴ except³⁸⁰⁸ ye destroy⁸⁰⁴⁵ the accursed²⁷⁶⁴ from among

¹³ Up,⁶⁹⁶⁵ sanctify⁶⁹⁴² the people,⁵⁹⁷¹ and say,⁵⁵⁹ Sanctify⁶⁹⁴² yourselves against to morrow:⁴²⁷⁹ for thus saith⁵⁵⁹ the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ God⁴³⁰ of Israel,³⁴⁷⁸ There is an accursed thing²⁷⁶⁴ in the midst⁷¹³⁰ of thee, O Israel:³⁴⁷⁸ thou canst³²⁰¹ not stand⁶⁹⁶⁵ before⁶⁴⁴⁰ thine enemies,³⁴¹ until ye take away⁵⁴⁹³ the accursed thing²⁷⁶⁴ from among

¹⁴ In the morning¹²⁴² therefore ye shall be brought⁷¹²⁶ according to your tribes:⁷⁶²⁶ and it shall be, that the tribe⁷⁶²⁶ which the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ taketh³⁹²⁰ shall come⁷¹²⁶ according to the families⁴⁹⁴⁰ thereof; and the family⁴⁹⁴⁰ which the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ shall take³⁹²⁰ shall come⁷¹²⁶ by households;¹⁰⁰⁴ and the household¹⁰⁰⁴ which the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ shall take³⁹²⁰ shall come⁷¹²⁶ man¹³⁹⁷ by man.

¹⁵ And it shall be, that he that is taken³⁹²⁰ with the accursed thing²⁷⁶⁴ shall be burnt⁸³¹³ with fire,⁷⁸⁴ he and all that he hath: because he hath transgressed⁵⁶⁷⁴ the covenant¹²⁸⁵ of the Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ and because he hath wrought⁶²¹³ folly⁵⁰³⁹ in Israel.

¹⁶ So Joshua³⁰⁹¹ rose up early⁷⁹²⁵ in the morning,¹²⁴² and brought⁷¹²⁶ Israel³⁴⁷⁸ by their tribes;⁷⁶²⁶ and the tribe⁷⁶²⁶ of Judah³⁰⁶³ was taken:

¹⁷ And he brought⁷¹²⁶ the family⁴⁹⁴⁰ of Judah;³⁰⁶³ and he took³⁹²⁰ the family⁴⁹⁴⁰ of the Zarhites:²²²⁷ and he brought⁷¹²⁶ the family⁴⁹⁴⁰ of the Zarhites²²²⁷ man¹³⁹⁷ by man;¹³⁹⁷ and Zabdi²⁰⁶⁷ was taken:

¹⁸ And he brought⁷¹²⁶ his household¹⁰⁰⁴ man¹³⁹⁷ by man;¹³⁹⁷ and Achan,⁵⁹¹² the son¹¹²¹ of Carmi,³⁷⁵⁶ the son¹¹²¹ of Zabdi,²⁰⁶⁷ the son¹¹²¹ of Zerah,²²²⁶ of the tribe⁴²⁹⁴ of Judah,³⁰⁶³ was taken.

¹⁹ And Joshua³⁰⁹¹ said⁵⁵⁹ unto Achan,⁵⁹¹² My son,¹¹²¹ give,⁷⁷⁶⁰ I pray thee, glory³⁵¹⁹ to the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ God⁴³⁰ of Israel,³⁴⁷⁸ and make⁵⁴¹⁴ confession⁸⁴²⁶ unto him; and tell⁵⁰⁴⁶ me now what thou hast done;⁶²¹³ hide

²⁰ And Achan⁵⁹¹² answered⁶⁰³⁰ Joshua,³⁰⁹¹ and said,⁵⁵⁹ Indeed⁵⁴⁶ I have sinned²³⁹⁸ against the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ God⁴³⁰ of Israel,³⁴⁷⁸ and thus and thus have I done:

²¹ When I saw⁷²⁰⁰ among the spoils⁷⁹⁹⁸ a²⁵⁹ goodly²⁸⁹⁶ Babylonish⁸¹⁵² garment,¹⁵⁵ and two hundred³⁹⁶⁷ shekels⁸²⁵⁵ of silver,³⁷⁰¹ and a²⁵⁹ wedge³⁹⁵⁶ of gold²⁰⁹¹ of fifty²⁵⁷² shekels⁸²⁵⁵ weight,⁴⁹⁴⁸ then I coveted²⁵³⁰ them, and took³⁹⁴⁷ them; and, behold, they are hid²⁹³⁴ in the earth⁷⁷⁶ in the midst⁸⁴³² of my tent,¹⁶⁸ and the silver

²² So Joshua³⁰⁹¹ sent⁷⁹⁷¹ messengers,⁴³⁹⁷ and they ran⁷³²³ unto the tent;¹⁶⁸ and, behold, it was hid²⁹³⁴ in his tent,¹⁶⁸ and the silver

²³ And they took³⁹⁴⁷ them out of the midst⁸⁴³² of the tent,¹⁶⁸ and brought⁹³⁵ them unto Joshua,³⁰⁹¹ and unto all the children¹¹²¹ of Israel,³⁴⁷⁸ and laid them out³³³² before⁶⁴⁴⁰ the Lord.

²⁴ And Joshua,³⁰⁹¹ and all Israel³⁴⁷⁸ with him, took³⁹⁴⁷ Achan⁵⁹¹² the son¹¹²¹ of Zerah,²²²⁶ and the silver,³⁷⁰¹ and the garment,¹⁵⁵ and the wedge³⁹⁵⁶ of gold,²⁰⁹¹ and his sons,¹¹²¹ and his daughters,¹³²³ and his oxen,⁷⁷⁹⁴ and his asses,²⁵⁴³ and his sheep,⁶⁶²⁹ and his tent,¹⁶⁸ and all that he had: and they brought⁵⁹²⁷ them unto the valley⁶⁰¹⁰ of Achor.

^25C And Joshua³⁰⁹¹ said,⁵⁵⁹ Why⁴¹⁰⁰ hast thou troubled⁵⁹¹⁶ us? the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ shall trouble⁵⁹¹⁶ thee this day.³¹¹⁷ And all Israel³⁴⁷⁸ stoned⁷²⁷⁵ him with stones,⁶⁸ and burned⁸³¹³ them with fire,⁷⁸⁴ after they had stoned⁵⁶¹⁹ them with stones.

²⁶ And they raised⁶⁹⁶⁵ over him a great¹⁴¹⁹ heap¹⁵³⁰ of stones⁶⁸ unto this day.³¹¹⁷ So the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ turned⁷⁷²⁵ from the fierceness²⁷⁴⁰ of his anger.⁶³⁹ Wherefore the name⁸⁰³⁴ of that place⁴⁷²⁵ was called,⁷¹²¹ The valley⁶⁰¹⁰ of Achor,⁵⁹¹¹ unto this day.

8And the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ said⁵⁵⁹ unto Joshua,³⁰⁹¹ Fear³³⁷² not, neither be thou dismayed:²⁸⁶⁵ take³⁹⁴⁷ all the people⁵⁹⁷¹ of war⁴⁴²¹ with thee, and arise,⁶⁹⁶⁵ go up⁵⁹²⁷ to Ai:⁵⁸⁵⁷ see,⁷²⁰⁰ I have given⁵⁴¹⁴ into thy hand³⁰²⁷ the king⁴⁴²⁸ of Ai,⁵⁸⁵⁷ and his people,⁵⁹⁷¹ and his city,⁵⁸⁹² and his land:

² And thou shalt do⁶²¹³ to Ai⁵⁸⁵⁷ and her king⁴⁴²⁸ as thou didst⁶²¹³ unto Jericho³⁴⁰⁵ and her king:⁴⁴²⁸ only the spoil⁷⁹⁹⁸ thereof, and the cattle⁹²⁹ thereof, shall ye take for a prey⁹⁶² unto yourselves: lay⁷⁷⁶⁰ thee an ambush⁶⁹³ for the city⁵⁸⁹² behind

³ So Joshua³⁰⁹¹ arose,⁶⁹⁶⁵ and all the people⁵⁹⁷¹ of war,⁴⁴²¹ to go up⁵⁹²⁷ against Ai:⁵⁸⁵⁷ and Joshua³⁰⁹¹ chose out⁹⁷⁷ thirty⁷⁹⁷⁰ thousand⁵⁰⁵ mighty¹³⁶⁸ men³⁷⁶ of valour,²⁴²⁸ and sent them away⁷⁹⁷¹ by night.

⁴ And he commanded⁶⁶⁸⁰ them, saying,⁵⁵⁹ Behold,⁷²⁰⁰ ye shall lie in wait⁶⁹³ against the city,⁵⁸⁹² even behind³¹⁰ the city:⁵⁸⁹² go⁷³⁶⁸ not very³⁹⁶⁶ far⁷³⁶⁸ from the city,⁵⁸⁹² but be ye all ready:

⁵ And I, and all the people⁵⁹⁷¹ that are with me, will approach⁷¹²⁶ unto the city:⁵⁸⁹² and it shall come to pass, when they come out³³¹⁸ against⁷¹²⁵ us, as at the first,⁷²²³ that we will flee⁵¹²⁷ before

⁶ (For they will come out³³¹⁸ after³¹⁰ us) till we have drawn⁵⁴²³ them from the city;⁵⁸⁹² for they will say,⁵⁵⁹ They flee⁵¹²⁷ before⁶⁴⁴⁰ us, as at the first:⁷²²³ therefore we will flee⁵¹²⁷ before

⁷ Then ye shall rise up⁶⁹⁶⁵ from the ambush,⁶⁹³ and seize³⁴²³ upon the city:⁵⁸⁹² for the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ your God⁴³⁰ will deliver⁵⁴¹⁴ it into your hand.

⁸ And it shall be, when ye have taken⁸⁶¹⁰ the city,⁵⁸⁹² that ye shall set³³⁴¹ the city⁵⁸⁹² on fire:⁷⁸⁴ according to the commandment¹⁶⁹⁷ of the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ shall ye do.⁶²¹³ See,⁷²⁰⁰ I have commanded

⁹ Joshua³⁰⁹¹ therefore sent them forth:⁷⁹⁷¹ and they went³²¹² to lie in ambush,³⁹⁹³ and abode³⁴²⁷ between Bethel¹⁰⁰⁸ and Ai,⁵⁸⁵⁷ on the west side³²²⁰ of Ai:⁵⁸⁵⁷ but Joshua³⁰⁹¹ lodged³⁸⁸⁵ that night³⁹¹⁵ among⁸⁴³² the people.

¹⁰ And Joshua³⁰⁹¹ rose up early⁷⁹²⁵ in the morning,¹²⁴² and numbered⁶⁴⁸⁵ the people,⁵⁹⁷¹ and went up,⁵⁹²⁷ he and the elders²²⁰⁵ of Israel,³⁴⁷⁸ before⁶⁴⁴⁰ the people⁵⁹⁷¹ to Ai.

¹¹ And all the people,⁵⁹⁷¹ even the people of war⁴⁴²¹ that were with him, went up,⁵⁹²⁷ and drew nigh,⁵⁰⁶⁶ and came⁹³⁵ before the city,⁵⁸⁹² and pitched²⁵⁸³ on the north side⁶⁸²⁸ of Ai:⁵⁸⁵⁷ now there was a valley¹⁵¹⁶ between them and Ai.

¹² And he took³⁹⁴⁷ about five²⁵⁶⁸ thousand⁵⁰⁵ men,³⁷⁶ and set⁷⁷⁶⁰ them to lie in ambush⁶⁹³ between Bethel¹⁰⁰⁸ and Ai,⁵⁸⁵⁷ on the west side³²²⁰ of the city.⁵⁸⁵⁷

¹³ And when they had set⁷⁷⁶⁰ the people,⁵⁹⁷¹ even all the host⁴²⁶⁴ that was on the north⁶⁸²⁸ of the city,⁵⁸⁹² and their liers in wait⁶¹¹⁹ on the west³²²⁰ of the city,⁵⁸⁹² Joshua³⁰⁹¹ went³²¹² that night³⁹¹⁵ into the midst⁸⁴³² of the valley.

¹⁴ And it came to pass, when the king⁴⁴²⁸ of Ai⁵⁸⁵⁷ saw⁷²⁰⁰ it, that they hasted⁴¹¹⁶ and rose up early,⁷⁹²⁵ and the men⁵⁸² of the city⁵⁸⁹² went out³³¹⁸ against⁷¹²⁵ Israel³⁴⁷⁸ to battle,⁴⁴²¹ he and all his people,⁵⁹⁷¹ at a time appointed,⁴¹⁵⁰ before⁶⁴⁴⁰ the plain;⁶¹⁶⁰ but he wist³⁰⁴⁵ not that there were liers in ambush⁶⁹³ against him behind³¹⁰ the city.

¹⁵ And Joshua³⁰⁹¹ and all Israel³⁴⁷⁸ made as if they were beaten⁵⁰⁶⁰ before⁶⁴⁴⁰ them, and fled⁵¹²⁷ by the way¹⁸⁷⁰ of the wilderness.

¹⁶ And all the people⁵⁹⁷¹ that were in Ai^58575892 were called²¹⁹⁹ together to pursue⁷²⁹¹ after³¹⁰ them: and they pursued⁷²⁹¹ after³¹⁰ Joshua,³⁰⁹¹ and were drawn away⁵⁴²³ from the city.

¹⁷ And there was not a man³⁷⁶ left⁷⁶⁰⁴ in Ai⁵⁸⁵⁷ or Bethel,¹⁰⁰⁸ that went not out³³¹⁸ after³¹⁰ Israel:³⁴⁷⁸ and they left⁵⁸⁰⁰ the city⁵⁸⁹² open,⁶⁶⁰⁵ and pursued⁷²⁹¹ after Israel.

¹⁸ And the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ said⁵⁵⁹ unto Joshua,³⁰⁹¹ Stretch out⁵¹⁸⁶ the spear³⁵⁹¹ that is in thy hand³⁰²⁷ toward Ai;⁵⁸⁵⁷ for I will give⁵⁴¹⁴ it into thine hand.³⁰²⁷ And Joshua³⁰⁹¹ stretched out⁵¹⁸⁶ the spear³⁵⁹¹ that he had in his hand³⁰²⁷ toward the city.

¹⁹ And the ambush⁶⁹³ arose⁶⁹⁶⁵ quickly⁴¹²⁰ out of their place,⁴⁷²⁵ and they ran⁷³²³ as soon as he had stretched out⁵¹⁸⁶ his hand:³⁰²⁷ and they entered⁹³⁵ into the city,⁵⁸⁹² and took³⁹²⁰ it, and hasted⁴¹¹⁶ and set³³⁴¹ the city⁵⁸⁹² on fire.

²⁰ And when the men⁵⁸² of Ai⁵⁸⁵⁷ looked⁶⁴³⁷ behind³¹⁰ them, they saw,⁷²⁰⁰ and, behold, the smoke⁶²²⁷ of the city⁵⁸⁹² ascended up⁵⁹²⁷ to heaven,⁸⁰⁶⁴ and they had no power³⁰²⁷ to flee⁵¹²⁷ this way or that way:²⁰⁰⁸ and the people⁵⁹⁷¹ that fled⁵¹²⁷ to the wilderness⁴⁰⁵⁷ turned back²⁰¹⁵ upon the pursuers.

²¹ And when Joshua³⁰⁹¹ and all Israel³⁴⁷⁸ saw⁷²⁰⁰ that the ambush⁶⁹³ had taken³⁹²⁰ the city,⁵⁸⁹² and that the smoke⁶²²⁷ of the city⁵⁸⁹² ascended,⁵⁹²⁷ then they turned again,⁷⁷²⁵ and slew⁵²²¹ the men⁵⁸² of Ai.

²² And the other⁴²⁸ issued out³³¹⁸ of the city⁵⁸⁹² against⁷¹²⁵ them; so they were in the midst⁸⁴³² of Israel,³⁴⁷⁸ some on this side, and some on that side: and they smote⁵²²¹ them, so that⁵⁷⁰⁴ they let⁷⁶⁰⁴ none of them remain⁸³⁰⁰ or escape.

²³ And the king⁴⁴²⁸ of Ai⁵⁸⁵⁷ they took⁸⁶¹⁰ alive,²⁴¹⁶ and brought⁷¹²⁶ him to Joshua.

²⁴ And it came to pass, when Israel³⁴⁷⁸ had made an end³⁶¹⁵ of slaying²⁰²⁶ all the inhabitants³⁴²⁷ of Ai⁵⁸⁵⁷ in the field,⁷⁷⁰⁴ in the wilderness⁴⁰⁵⁷ wherein they chased⁷²⁹¹ them, and when they were all fallen⁵³⁰⁷ on the edge⁶³¹⁰ of the sword,²⁷¹⁹ until they were consumed,⁸⁵⁵² that all the Israelites³⁴⁷⁸ returned⁷⁷²⁵ unto Ai,⁵⁸⁵⁷ and smote⁵²²¹ it with the edge⁶³¹⁰ of the sword.

²⁵ And so it was, that all that fell⁵³⁰⁷ that day,³¹¹⁷ both of men³⁷⁶ and women,⁸⁰² were twelve^81476240 thousand,⁵⁰⁵ even all the men⁵⁸² of Ai.

²⁶ For Joshua³⁰⁹¹ drew⁷⁷²⁵ not his hand³⁰²⁷ back,⁷⁷²⁵ wherewith he stretched out⁵¹⁸⁶ the spear,³⁵⁹¹ until he had utterly destroyed²⁷⁶³ all the inhabitants³⁴²⁷ of Ai.

²⁷ Only the cattle⁹²⁹ and the spoil⁷⁹⁹⁸ of that city⁵⁸⁹² Israel³⁴⁷⁸ took for a prey⁹⁶² unto themselves, according unto the word¹⁶⁹⁷ of the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ which he commanded⁶⁶⁸⁰ Joshua.

²⁸ And Joshua³⁰⁹¹ burnt⁸³¹³ Ai,⁵⁸⁵⁷ and made⁷⁷⁶⁰ it an heap⁸⁵¹⁰ for ever,⁵⁷⁶⁹ even a desolation⁸⁰⁷⁷ unto this day.

²⁹ And the king⁴⁴²⁸ of Ai⁵⁸⁵⁷ he hanged⁸⁵¹⁸ on a tree⁶⁰⁸⁶ until eventide:^62566153 and as soon as the sun⁸¹²¹ was down,⁹³⁵ Joshua³⁰⁹¹ commanded⁶⁶⁸⁰ that they should take³³⁸¹ his carcase⁵⁰³⁸ down³³⁸¹ from the tree,⁶⁰⁸⁶ and cast⁷⁹⁹³ it at the entering⁶⁶⁰⁷ of the gate⁸¹⁷⁹ of the city,⁵⁸⁹² and raise⁶⁹⁶⁵ thereon a great¹⁴¹⁹ heap¹⁵³⁰ of stones,⁶⁸ that remaineth unto this day.

³⁰ Then Joshua³⁰⁹¹ built¹¹²⁹ an altar⁴¹⁹⁶ unto the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ God⁴³⁰ of Israel³⁴⁷⁸ in mount²⁰²² Ebal,

³¹ As Moses⁴⁸⁷² the servant⁵⁶⁵⁰ of the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ commanded⁶⁶⁸⁰ the children¹¹²¹ of Israel,³⁴⁷⁸ as it is written³⁷⁸⁹ in the book⁵⁶¹² of the law⁸⁴⁵¹ of Moses,⁴⁸⁷² an altar⁴¹⁹⁶ of whole⁸⁰⁰³ stones,⁶⁸ over which no man hath lift up⁵¹³⁰ any iron:¹²⁷⁰ and they offered⁵⁹²⁷ thereon burnt offerings⁵⁹³⁰ unto the Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ and sacrificed²⁰⁷⁶ peace offerings.

³² And he wrote³⁷⁸⁹ there upon the stones⁶⁸ a copy⁴⁹³² of the law⁸⁴⁵¹ of Moses,⁴⁸⁷² which he wrote³⁷⁸⁹ in the presence⁶⁴⁴⁰ of the children¹¹²¹ of Israel.

^33C And all Israel,³⁴⁷⁸ and their elders,²²⁰⁵ and officers,⁷⁸⁶⁰ and their judges,⁸¹⁹⁹ stood⁵⁹⁷⁵ on this side the ark⁷²⁷ and on that side before the priests³⁵⁴⁸ the Levites,³⁸⁸¹ which bare⁵³⁷⁵ the ark⁷²⁷ of the covenant¹²⁸⁵ of the Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ as well the stranger,¹⁶¹⁶ as he that was born²⁴⁹ among them; half²⁶⁷⁷ of them over⁴¹³ against⁴¹³⁶ mount²⁰²² Gerizim,¹⁶³⁰ and half²⁶⁷⁷ of them over against⁴¹³⁶ mount²⁰²² Ebal;⁵⁸⁵⁸ as Moses⁴⁸⁷² the servant⁵⁶⁵⁰ of the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ had commanded⁶⁶⁸⁰ before,⁷²²³ that they should bless¹²⁸⁸ the people⁵⁹⁷¹ of Israel.

^34C And afterward³¹⁰ he read⁷¹²¹ all the words¹⁶⁹⁷ of the law,⁸⁴⁵¹ the blessings¹²⁹³ and cursings,⁷⁰⁴⁵ according to all that is written³⁷⁸⁹ in the book⁵⁶¹² of the law.

³⁵ There was not a word¹⁶⁹⁷ of all that Moses⁴⁸⁷² commanded,⁶⁶⁸⁰ which Joshua³⁰⁹¹ read⁷¹²¹ not before all the congregation⁶⁹⁵¹ of Israel,³⁴⁷⁸ with the women,⁸⁰² and the little ones,²⁹⁴⁵ and the strangers¹⁶¹⁶ that were conversant¹⁹⁸⁰ among

9And it came to pass, when all the kings⁴⁴²⁸ which were on this side⁵⁶⁷⁶ Jordan,³³⁸³ in the hills,²⁰²² and in the valleys,⁸²¹⁹ and in all the coasts²³⁴⁸ of the great¹⁴¹⁹ sea³²²⁰ over against⁴¹³⁶ Lebanon,³⁸⁴⁴ the Hittite,²⁸⁵⁰ and the Amorite,⁵⁶⁷ the Canaanite,³⁶⁶⁹ the Perizzite,⁶⁵²² the Hivite,²³⁴⁰ and the Jebusite,²⁹⁸³ heard

² That they gathered⁶⁹⁰⁸ themselves together,³¹⁶² to fight³⁸⁹⁸ with Joshua³⁰⁹¹ and with Israel,³⁴⁷⁸ with one²⁵⁹ accord.

³ And when the inhabitants³⁴²⁷ of Gibeon¹³⁹¹ heard⁸⁰⁸⁵ what Joshua³⁰⁹¹ had done⁶²¹³ unto Jericho³⁴⁰⁵ and to Ai,

⁴ They did work⁶²¹³ wilily,⁶¹⁹⁵ and went³²¹² and made as if they had been ambassadors,⁶⁷³⁷ and took³⁹⁴⁷ old¹⁰⁸⁷ sacks⁸²⁴² upon their asses,²⁵⁴³ and wine³¹⁹⁶ bottles,⁴⁹⁹⁷ old,¹⁰⁸⁷ and rent,¹²³⁴ and bound up;

⁵ And old¹⁰⁸⁷ shoes⁵²⁷⁵ and clouted²⁹²¹ upon their feet,⁷²⁷² and old¹⁰⁸⁷ garments⁸⁰⁰⁸ upon them; and all the bread³⁸⁹⁹ of their provision⁶⁷¹⁸ was dry³⁰⁰¹ and mouldy.

⁶ And they went³²¹² to Joshua³⁰⁹¹ unto the camp⁴²⁶⁴ at Gilgal,¹⁵³⁷ and said⁵⁵⁹ unto him, and to the men³⁷⁶ of Israel,³⁴⁷⁸ We be come⁹³⁵ from a far⁷³⁵⁰ country:⁷⁷⁶ now therefore make³⁷⁷² ye a league

⁷ And the men³⁷⁶ of Israel³⁴⁷⁸ said⁵⁵⁹ unto the Hivites,²³⁴⁰ Peradventure¹⁹⁴ ye dwell³⁴²⁷ among⁷¹³⁰ us; and how shall we make³⁷⁷² a league

⁸ And they said⁵⁵⁹ unto Joshua,³⁰⁹¹ We are thy servants.⁵⁶⁵⁰ And Joshua³⁰⁹¹ said⁵⁵⁹ unto them, Who are ye? and from whence³⁷⁰ come

⁹ And they said⁵⁵⁹ unto him, From a very³⁹⁶⁶ far⁷³⁵⁰ country⁷⁷⁶ thy servants⁵⁶⁵⁰ are come⁹³⁵ because of the name⁸⁰³⁴ of the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ thy God:⁴³⁰ for we have heard⁸⁰⁸⁵ the fame⁸⁰⁸⁹ of him, and all that he did⁶²¹³ in Egypt,

¹⁰ And all that he did⁶²¹³ to the two⁸¹⁴⁷ kings⁴⁴²⁸ of the Amorites,⁵⁶⁷ that were beyond⁵⁶⁷⁶ Jordan,³³⁸³ to Sihon⁵⁵¹¹ king⁴⁴²⁸ of Heshbon,²⁸⁰⁹ and to Og⁵⁷⁴⁷ king⁴⁴²⁸ of Bashan,¹³¹⁶ which was at Ashtaroth.

¹¹ Wherefore our elders²²⁰⁵ and all the inhabitants³⁴²⁷ of our country⁷⁷⁶ spake⁵⁵⁹ to us, saying,⁵⁵⁹ Take³⁹⁴⁷ victuals⁶⁷²⁰ with you³⁰²⁷ for the journey,¹⁸⁷⁰ and go³²¹² to meet⁷¹²⁵ them, and say⁵⁵⁹ unto them, We are your servants:⁵⁶⁵⁰ therefore now make³⁷⁷² ye a league

¹² This our bread³⁸⁹⁹ we took hot²⁵²⁵ for our provision⁶⁶⁷⁹ out of our houses¹⁰⁰⁴ on the day³¹¹⁷ we came forth³³¹⁸ to go³²¹² unto you; but now, behold, it is dry,³⁰⁰¹ and it is mouldy:

¹³ And these bottles⁴⁹⁹⁷ of wine,³¹⁹⁶ which we filled,⁴³⁹⁰ were new;²³¹⁹ and, behold, they be rent:¹²³⁴ and these our garments⁸⁰⁰⁸ and our shoes⁵²⁷⁵ are become old¹⁰⁸⁶ by reason of the very³⁹⁶⁶ long⁷²³⁰ journey.

¹⁴ And the men⁵⁸² took³⁹⁴⁷ of their victuals,⁶⁷¹⁸ and asked⁷⁵⁹² not counsel at the mouth⁶³¹⁰ of the Lord.

¹⁵ And Joshua³⁰⁹¹ made⁶²¹³ peace⁷⁹⁶⁵ with them, and made³⁷⁷² a league¹²⁸⁵ with them, to let them live:²⁴²¹ and the princes⁵³⁸⁷ of the congregation⁵⁷¹² sware

¹⁶ And it came to pass at the end⁷⁰⁹⁷ of three⁷⁹⁶⁹ days³¹¹⁷ after³¹⁰ they had made³⁷⁷² a league¹²⁸⁵ with them, that they heard⁸⁰⁸⁵ that they were their neighbours,⁷¹³⁸ and that they dwelt³⁴²⁷ among

¹⁷ And the children¹¹²¹ of Israel³⁴⁷⁸ journeyed,⁵²⁶⁵ and came⁹³⁵ unto their cities⁵⁸⁹² on the third⁷⁹⁹² day.³¹¹⁷ Now their cities⁵⁸⁹² were Gibeon,¹³⁹¹ and Chephirah,³⁷¹⁶ and Beeroth,⁸⁸¹ and Kirjathjearim.

¹⁸ And the children¹¹²¹ of Israel³⁴⁷⁸ smote⁵²²¹ them not, because the princes⁵³⁸⁷ of the congregation⁵⁷¹² had sworn⁷⁶⁵⁰ unto them by the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ God⁴³⁰ of Israel.³⁴⁷⁸ And all the congregation⁵⁷¹² murmured³⁸⁸⁵ against the princes.

¹⁹ But all the princes⁵³⁸⁷ said⁵⁵⁹ unto all the congregation,⁵⁷¹² We have sworn⁷⁶⁵⁰ unto them by the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ God⁴³⁰ of Israel:³⁴⁷⁸ now therefore we may³²⁰¹ not touch

²⁰ This we will do⁶²¹³ to them; we will even let them live,²⁴²¹ lest wrath⁷¹¹⁰ be upon us, because of the oath⁷⁶²¹ which we sware

²¹ And the princes⁵³⁸⁷ said⁵⁵⁹ unto them, Let them live;²⁴²¹ but let them be hewers²⁴⁰⁴ of wood⁶⁰⁸⁶ and drawers⁷⁵⁷⁹ of water⁴³²⁵ unto all the congregation;⁵⁷¹² as the princes⁵³⁸⁷ had promised

²² And Joshua³⁰⁹¹ called⁷¹²¹ for them, and he spake¹⁶⁹⁶ unto them, saying,⁵⁵⁹ Wherefore have ye beguiled⁷⁴¹¹ us, saying,⁵⁵⁹ We are very³⁹⁶⁶ far⁷³⁵⁰ from you; when ye dwell³⁴²⁷ among

²³ Now therefore ye are cursed,⁷⁷⁹ and there shall none of you be freed³⁷⁷² from being bondmen,⁵⁶⁵⁰ and hewers²⁴⁰⁴ of wood⁶⁰⁸⁶ and drawers⁷⁵⁷⁹ of water⁴³²⁵ for the house¹⁰⁰⁴ of my God.

²⁴ And they answered⁶⁰³⁰ Joshua,³⁰⁹¹ and said,⁵⁵⁹ Because it was certainly⁵⁰⁴⁶ told⁵⁰⁴⁶ thy servants,⁵⁶⁵⁰ how that the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ thy God⁴³⁰ commanded⁶⁶⁸⁰ his servant⁵⁶⁵⁰ Moses⁴⁸⁷² to give⁵⁴¹⁴ you all the land,⁷⁷⁶ and to destroy⁸⁰⁴⁵ all the inhabitants³⁴²⁷ of the land⁷⁷⁶ from before⁶⁴⁴⁰ you, therefore we were sore³⁹⁶⁶ afraid³³⁷² of our lives⁵³¹⁵ because⁶⁴⁴⁰ of you, and have done⁶²¹³ this thing.

²⁵ And now, behold, we²⁰⁰⁹ are in thine hand:³⁰²⁷ as it seemeth⁵⁸⁶⁹ good²⁸⁹⁶ and right³⁴⁷⁷ unto thee to do⁶²¹³ unto us, do.

²⁶ And so did⁶²¹³ he unto them, and delivered⁵³³⁷ them out of the hand³⁰²⁷ of the children¹¹²¹ of Israel,³⁴⁷⁸ that they slew

²⁷ And Joshua³⁰⁹¹ made⁵⁴¹⁴ them that day³¹¹⁷ hewers²⁴⁰⁴ of wood⁶⁰⁸⁶ and drawers⁷⁵⁷⁹ of water⁴³²⁵ for the congregation,⁵⁷¹² and for the altar⁴¹⁹⁶ of the Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ even unto this day,³¹¹⁷ in the place⁴⁷²⁵ which he should choose.

10Now it came to pass, when Adonizedek¹³⁹ king⁴⁴²⁸ of Jerusalem³³⁸⁹ had heard⁸⁰⁸⁵ how³⁵⁸⁸ Joshua³⁰⁹¹ had taken³⁹²⁰ Ai,⁵⁸⁵⁷ and had utterly destroyed²⁷⁶³ it; as he had done⁶²¹³ to Jericho³⁴⁰⁵ and her king,⁴⁴²⁸ so he had done⁶²¹³ to Ai⁵⁸⁵⁷ and her king;⁴⁴²⁸ and how the inhabitants³⁴²⁷ of Gibeon¹³⁹¹ had made peace⁷⁹⁹⁹ with Israel,³⁴⁷⁸ and were among

² That they feared³³⁷² greatly,³⁹⁶⁶ because Gibeon¹³⁹¹ was a great¹⁴¹⁹ city,⁵⁸⁹² as one²⁵⁹ of the royal⁴⁴⁶⁷ cities,⁵⁸⁹² and because it was greater¹⁴¹⁹ than Ai,⁵⁸⁵⁷ and all the men⁵⁸² thereof were mighty.

^3C Wherefore Adonizedek¹³⁹ king⁴⁴²⁸ of Jerusalem³³⁸⁹ sent⁷⁹⁷¹ unto Hoham¹⁹⁴⁴ king⁴⁴²⁸ of Hebron,²²⁷⁵ and unto Piram⁶⁵⁰² king⁴⁴²⁸ of Jarmuth,³⁴¹² and unto Japhia³³⁰⁹ king⁴⁴²⁸ of Lachish,³⁹²³ and unto Debir¹⁶⁸⁸ king⁴⁴²⁸ of Eglon,⁵⁷⁰⁰ saying,

⁴ Come up⁵⁹²⁷ unto me, and help⁵⁸²⁶ me, that we may smite⁵²²¹ Gibeon:¹³⁹¹ for it hath made peace⁷⁹⁹⁹ with Joshua³⁰⁹¹ and with the children¹¹²¹ of Israel.

⁵ Therefore the five²⁵⁶⁸ kings⁴⁴²⁸ of the Amorites,⁵⁶⁷ the king⁴⁴²⁸ of Jerusalem,³³⁸⁹ the king⁴⁴²⁸ of Hebron,²²⁷⁵ the king⁴⁴²⁸ of Jarmuth,³⁴¹² the king⁴⁴²⁸ of Lachish,³⁹²³ the king⁴⁴²⁸ of Eglon,⁵⁷⁰⁰ gathered themselves together,⁶²² and went up,⁵⁹²⁷ they and all their hosts,⁴²⁶⁴ and encamped²⁵⁸³ before Gibeon,¹³⁹¹ and made war

⁶ And the men⁵⁸² of Gibeon¹³⁹¹ sent⁷⁹⁷¹ unto Joshua³⁰⁹¹ to the camp⁴²⁶⁴ to Gilgal,¹⁵³⁷ saying,⁵⁵⁹ Slack⁷⁵⁰³ not thy hand³⁰²⁷ from thy servants;⁵⁶⁵⁰ come up⁵⁹²⁷ to us quickly,⁴¹²⁰ and save³⁴⁶⁷ us, and help⁵⁸²⁶ us: for all the kings⁴⁴²⁸ of the Amorites⁵⁶⁷ that dwell³⁴²⁷ in the mountains²⁰²² are gathered together

⁷ So Joshua³⁰⁹¹ ascended⁵⁹²⁷ from Gilgal,¹⁵³⁷ he, and all the people⁵⁹⁷¹ of war⁴⁴²¹ with him, and all the mighty¹³⁶⁸ men of valour.

⁸ And the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ said⁵⁵⁹ unto Joshua,³⁰⁹¹ Fear³³⁷² them not: for I have delivered⁵⁴¹⁴ them into thine hand;³⁰²⁷ there shall not a man³⁷⁶ of them stand⁵⁹⁷⁵ before

⁹ Joshua³⁰⁹¹ therefore came⁹³⁵ unto them suddenly,⁶⁵⁹⁷ and went up⁵⁹²⁷ from Gilgal¹⁵³⁷ all night.

^10C And the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ discomfited²⁰⁰⁰ them before⁶⁴⁴⁰ Israel,³⁴⁷⁸ and slew⁵²²¹ them with a great¹⁴¹⁹ slaughter⁴³⁴⁷ at Gibeon,¹³⁹¹ and chased⁷²⁹¹ them along the way¹⁸⁷⁰ that goeth up⁴⁶⁰⁸ to Bethhoron,¹⁰³² and smote⁵²²¹ them to Azekah,⁵⁸²⁵ and unto Makkedah.

^11C And it came to pass, as they fled⁵¹²⁷ from before⁶⁴⁴⁰ Israel,³⁴⁷⁸ and were in the going down⁴¹⁷⁴ to Bethhoron,¹⁰³² that the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ cast down⁷⁹⁹³ great¹⁴¹⁹ stones⁶⁸ from heaven⁸⁰⁶⁴ upon them unto Azekah,⁵⁸²⁵ and they died:⁴¹⁹¹ they were more⁷²²⁷ which died⁴¹⁹¹ with hailstones¹²⁵⁹⁶⁸ than they whom⁸³⁴ the children¹¹²¹ of Israel³⁴⁷⁸ slew²⁰²⁶ with the sword.

^12C Then spake¹⁶⁹⁶ Joshua³⁰⁹¹ to the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ in the day³¹¹⁷ when the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ delivered up⁵⁴¹⁴ the Amorites⁵⁶⁷ before⁶⁴⁴⁰ the children¹¹²¹ of Israel,³⁴⁷⁸ and he said⁵⁵⁹ in the sight⁵⁸⁶⁹ of Israel,³⁴⁷⁸ Sun,⁸¹²¹ stand thou still¹⁸²⁶ upon Gibeon;¹³⁹¹ and thou, Moon,³³⁹⁴ in the valley⁶⁰¹⁰ of Ajalon.

^13C And the sun⁸¹²¹ stood still,¹⁸²⁶ and the moon³³⁹⁴ stayed,⁵⁹⁷⁵ until the people¹⁴⁷¹ had avenged⁵³⁵⁸ themselves upon their enemies.³⁴¹ Is not this¹⁹³¹ written³⁷⁸⁹ in the book⁵⁶¹² of Jasher?³⁴⁷⁷ So the sun⁸¹²¹ stood still⁵⁹⁷⁵ in the midst²⁶⁷⁷ of heaven,⁸⁰⁶⁴ and hasted²¹³ not to go down⁹³⁵ about a whole⁸⁵⁴⁹ day.

¹⁴ And there was no day³¹¹⁷ like that before⁶⁴⁴⁰ it or after³¹⁰ it, that the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ hearkened⁸⁰⁸⁵ unto the voice⁶⁹⁶³ of a man:³⁷⁶ for the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ fought³⁸⁹⁸ for Israel.

¹⁵ And Joshua³⁰⁹¹ returned,⁷⁷²⁵ and all Israel³⁴⁷⁸ with him, unto the camp⁴²⁶⁴ to Gilgal.

¹⁶ But these five²⁵⁶⁸ kings⁴⁴²⁸ fled,⁵¹²⁷ and hid²²⁴⁴ themselves in a cave⁴⁶³¹ at Makkedah.

¹⁷ And it was told⁵⁰⁴⁶ Joshua,³⁰⁹¹ saying,⁵⁵⁹ The five²⁵⁶⁸ kings⁴⁴²⁸ are found⁴⁶⁷² hid²²⁴⁴ in a cave⁴⁶³¹ at Makkedah.

¹⁸ And Joshua³⁰⁹¹ said,⁵⁵⁹ Roll¹⁵⁵⁶ great¹⁴¹⁹ stones⁶⁸ upon the mouth⁶³¹⁰ of the cave,⁴⁶³¹ and set⁶⁴⁸⁵ men⁵⁸² by it for to keep

¹⁹ And stay⁵⁹⁷⁵ ye not, but pursue⁷²⁹¹ after³¹⁰ your enemies,³⁴¹ and smite the hindmost²¹⁷⁹ of them; suffer⁵⁴¹⁴ them not to enter⁹³⁵ into their cities:⁵⁸⁹² for the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ your God⁴³⁰ hath delivered⁵⁴¹⁴ them into your hand.

²⁰ And it came to pass, when Joshua³⁰⁹¹ and the children¹¹²¹ of Israel³⁴⁷⁸ had made an end³⁶¹⁵ of slaying⁵²²¹ them with a very³⁹⁶⁶ great¹⁴¹⁹ slaughter,⁴³⁴⁷ till they were consumed,⁸⁵⁵² that the rest⁸³⁰⁰ which remained⁸²⁷⁷ of them entered⁹³⁵ into fenced⁴⁰¹³ cities.

²¹ And all the people⁵⁹⁷¹ returned⁷⁷²⁵ to the camp⁴²⁶⁴ to Joshua³⁰⁹¹ at Makkedah⁴⁷¹⁹ in peace:⁷⁹⁶⁵ none moved²⁷⁸² his tongue³⁹⁵⁶ against any³⁷⁶ of the children¹¹²¹ of Israel.

²² Then said⁵⁵⁹ Joshua,³⁰⁹¹ Open⁶⁶⁰⁵ the mouth⁶³¹⁰ of the cave,⁴⁶³¹ and bring out³³¹⁸ those five²⁵⁶⁸ kings⁴⁴²⁸ unto me out of the cave.

²³ And they did⁶²¹³ so, and brought forth³³¹⁸ those five²⁵⁶⁸ kings⁴⁴²⁸ unto him out of the cave,⁴⁶³¹ the king⁴⁴²⁸ of Jerusalem,³³⁸⁹ the king⁴⁴²⁸ of Hebron,²²⁷⁵ the king⁴⁴²⁸ of Jarmuth,³⁴¹² the king⁴⁴²⁸ of Lachish,³⁹²³ and the king⁴⁴²⁸ of Eglon.

²⁴ And it came to pass, when they brought out³³¹⁸ those kings⁴⁴²⁸ unto Joshua,³⁰⁹¹ that Joshua³⁰⁹¹ called⁷¹²¹ for all the men³⁷⁶ of Israel,³⁴⁷⁸ and said⁵⁵⁹ unto the captains⁷¹⁰¹ of the men⁵⁸² of war⁴⁴²¹ which went¹⁹⁸⁰ with him, Come near,⁷¹²⁶ put⁷⁷⁶⁰ your feet⁷²⁷² upon the necks⁶⁶⁷⁷ of these kings.⁴⁴²⁸ And they came near,⁷¹²⁶ and put⁷⁷⁶⁰ their feet⁷²⁷² upon the necks

²⁵ And Joshua³⁰⁹¹ said⁵⁵⁹ unto them, Fear³³⁷² not, nor be dismayed,²⁸⁶⁵ be strong²³⁸⁸ and of good courage:⁵⁵³ for thus shall the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ do⁶²¹³ to all your enemies³⁴¹ against whom ye fight.

²⁶ And afterward³¹⁰ Joshua³⁰⁹¹ smote⁵²²¹ them, and slew⁴¹⁹¹ them, and hanged⁸⁵¹⁸ them on five²⁵⁶⁸ trees:⁶⁰⁸⁶ and they were hanging⁸⁵¹⁸ upon the trees⁶⁰⁸⁶ until the evening.

²⁷ And it came to pass at the time⁶²⁵⁶ of the going down⁹³⁵ of the sun,⁸¹²¹ that Joshua³⁰⁹¹ commanded,⁶⁶⁸⁰ and they took them down³³⁸¹ off the trees,⁶⁰⁸⁶ and cast⁷⁹⁹³ them into the cave⁴⁶³¹ wherein they had been hid,²²⁴⁴ and laid⁷⁷⁶⁰ great¹⁴¹⁹ stones⁶⁸ in the cave's⁴⁶³¹ mouth,⁶³¹⁰ which remain until this very⁶¹⁰⁶ day.

²⁸ And that day³¹¹⁷ Joshua³⁰⁹¹ took³⁹²⁰ Makkedah,⁴⁷¹⁹ and smote⁵²²¹ it with the edge⁶³¹⁰ of the sword,²⁷¹⁹ and the king⁴⁴²⁸ thereof he utterly destroyed,²⁷⁶³ them, and all the souls⁵³¹⁵ that were therein; he let⁷⁶⁰⁴ none remain:⁸³⁰⁰ and he did⁶²¹³ to the king⁴⁴²⁸ of Makkedah⁴⁷¹⁹ as he did⁶²¹³ unto the king⁴⁴²⁸ of Jericho.

²⁹ Then Joshua³⁰⁹¹ passed⁵⁶⁷⁴ from Makkedah,⁴⁷¹⁹ and all Israel³⁴⁷⁸ with him, unto Libnah,³⁸⁴¹ and fought³⁸⁹⁸ against Libnah:

³⁰ And the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ delivered⁵⁴¹⁴ it also, and the king⁴⁴²⁸ thereof, into the hand³⁰²⁷ of Israel;³⁴⁷⁸ and he smote⁵²²¹ it with the edge⁶³¹⁰ of the sword,²⁷¹⁹ and all the souls⁵³¹⁵ that were therein; he let⁷⁶⁰⁴ none remain⁸³⁰⁰ in it; but did⁶²¹³ unto the king⁴⁴²⁸ thereof as he did⁶²¹³ unto the king⁴⁴²⁸ of Jericho.

³¹ And Joshua³⁰⁹¹ passed⁵⁶⁷⁴ from Libnah,³⁸⁴¹ and all Israel³⁴⁷⁸ with him, unto Lachish,³⁹²³ and encamped²⁵⁸³ against it, and fought

³² And the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ delivered⁵⁴¹⁴ Lachish³⁹²³ into the hand³⁰²⁷ of Israel,³⁴⁷⁸ which took³⁹²⁰ it on the second⁸¹⁴⁵ day,³¹¹⁷ and smote⁵²²¹ it with the edge⁶³¹⁰ of the sword,²⁷¹⁹ and all the souls⁵³¹⁵ that were therein, according to all that he had done⁶²¹³ to Libnah.

³³ Then Horam²⁰³⁶ king⁴⁴²⁸ of Gezer¹⁵⁰⁷ came up⁵⁹²⁷ to help⁵⁸²⁶ Lachish;³⁹²³ and Joshua³⁰⁹¹ smote⁵²²¹ him and his people,⁵⁹⁷¹ until he had left⁷⁶⁰⁴ him none remaining.

³⁴ And from Lachish³⁹²³ Joshua³⁰⁹¹ passed⁵⁶⁷⁴ unto Eglon,⁵⁷⁰⁰ and all Israel³⁴⁷⁸ with him; and they encamped²⁵⁸³ against it, and fought

^35C And they took³⁹²⁰ it on that day,³¹¹⁷ and smote⁵²²¹ it with the edge⁶³¹⁰ of the sword,²⁷¹⁹ and all the souls⁵³¹⁵ that were therein he utterly destroyed²⁷⁶³ that day,³¹¹⁷ according to all that he had done⁶²¹³ to Lachish.

³⁶ And Joshua³⁰⁹¹ went up⁵⁹²⁷ from Eglon,⁵⁷⁰⁰ and all Israel³⁴⁷⁸ with him, unto Hebron;²²⁷⁵ and they fought

³⁷ And they took³⁹²⁰ it, and smote⁵²²¹ it with the edge⁶³¹⁰ of the sword,²⁷¹⁹ and the king⁴⁴²⁸ thereof, and all the cities⁵⁸⁹² thereof, and all the souls⁵³¹⁵ that were therein; he left⁷⁶⁰⁴ none remaining,⁸³⁰⁰ according to all that he had done⁶²¹³ to Eglon;⁵⁷⁰⁰ but destroyed²⁷⁶³ it utterly, and all the souls

³⁸ And Joshua³⁰⁹¹ returned,⁷⁷²⁵ and all Israel³⁴⁷⁸ with him, to Debir;¹⁶⁸⁸ and fought

³⁹ And he took³⁹²⁰ it, and the king⁴⁴²⁸ thereof, and all the cities⁵⁸⁹² thereof; and they smote⁵²²¹ them with the edge⁶³¹⁰ of the sword,²⁷¹⁹ and utterly destroyed²⁷⁶³ all the souls⁵³¹⁵ that were therein; he left⁷⁶⁰⁴ none remaining:⁸³⁰⁰ as he had done⁶²¹³ to Hebron,²²⁷⁵ so he did⁶²¹³ to Debir,¹⁶⁸⁸ and to the king⁴⁴²⁸ thereof; as he had done⁶²¹³ also to Libnah,³⁸⁴¹ and to her king.

⁴⁰ So Joshua³⁰⁹¹ smote⁵²²¹ all the country⁷⁷⁶ of the hills,²⁰²² and of the south,⁵⁰⁴⁵ and of the vale,⁸²¹⁹ and of the springs,⁷⁹⁴ and all their kings:⁴⁴²⁸ he left⁷⁶⁰⁴ none remaining,⁸³⁰⁰ but utterly destroyed²⁷⁶³ all that breathed,⁵³⁹⁷ as the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ God⁴³⁰ of Israel³⁴⁷⁸ commanded.

⁴¹ And Joshua³⁰⁹¹ smote⁵²²¹ them from Kadeshbarnea⁶⁹⁴⁷ even unto Gaza,⁵⁸⁰⁴ and all the country⁷⁷⁶ of Goshen,¹⁶⁵⁷ even unto Gibeon.

^42C And all these kings⁴⁴²⁸ and their land⁷⁷⁶ did Joshua³⁰⁹¹ take³⁹²⁰ at one²⁵⁹ time,⁶⁴⁷¹ because the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ God⁴³⁰ of Israel³⁴⁷⁸ fought³⁸⁹⁸ for Israel.

⁴³ And Joshua³⁰⁹¹ returned,⁷⁷²⁵ and all Israel³⁴⁷⁸ with him, unto the camp⁴²⁶⁴ to Gilgal.

11^CAnd it came to pass, when Jabin²⁹⁸⁵ king⁴⁴²⁸ of Hazor²⁶⁷⁴ had heard⁸⁰⁸⁵ those things, that he sent⁷⁹⁷¹ to Jobab³¹⁰³ king⁴⁴²⁸ of Madon,⁴⁰⁶⁸ and to the king⁴⁴²⁸ of Shimron,⁸¹¹⁰ and to the king⁴⁴²⁸ of Achshaph,

² And to the kings⁴⁴²⁸ that were on the north⁶⁸²⁸ of the mountains,²⁰²² and of the plains⁶¹⁶⁰ south⁵⁰⁴⁵ of Chinneroth,³⁶⁷² and in the valley,⁸²¹⁹ and in the borders⁵²⁹⁹ of Dor¹⁷⁵⁶ on the west,

³ And to the Canaanite³⁶⁶⁹ on the east⁴²¹⁷ and on the west,³²²⁰ and to the Amorite,⁵⁶⁷ and the Hittite,²⁸⁵⁰ and the Perizzite,⁶⁵²² and the Jebusite²⁹⁸³ in the mountains,²⁰²² and to the Hivite²³⁴⁰ under Hermon²⁷⁶⁸ in the land⁷⁷⁶ of Mizpeh.

⁴ And they went out,³³¹⁸ they and all their hosts⁴²⁶⁴ with them, much⁷²²⁷ people,⁵⁹⁷¹ even as the sand²³⁴⁴ that is upon the sea³²²⁰ shore⁸¹⁹³ in multitude,⁷²³⁰ with horses⁵⁴⁸³ and chariots⁷³⁹³ very³⁹⁶⁶ many.

⁵ And when all these kings⁴⁴²⁸ were met together,³²⁵⁹ they came⁹³⁵ and pitched²⁵⁸³ together³¹⁶² at the waters⁴³²⁵ of Merom,⁴⁷⁹² to fight³⁸⁹⁸ against Israel.

⁶ And the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ said⁵⁵⁹ unto Joshua,³⁰⁹¹ Be not afraid³³⁷² because⁶⁴⁴⁰ of them: for to morrow⁴²⁷⁹ about this time⁶²⁵⁶ will I deliver them up⁵⁴¹⁴ all slain²⁴⁹¹ before⁶⁴⁴⁰ Israel:³⁴⁷⁸ thou shalt hough⁶¹³¹ their horses,⁵⁴⁸³ and burn⁸³¹³ their chariots⁴⁸¹⁸ with fire.

⁷ So Joshua³⁰⁹¹ came,⁹³⁵ and all the people⁵⁹⁷¹ of war⁴⁴²¹ with him, against them by the waters⁴³²⁵ of Merom⁴⁷⁹² suddenly;⁶⁵⁹⁷ and they fell upon

⁸ And the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ delivered⁵⁴¹⁴ them into the hand³⁰²⁷ of Israel,³⁴⁷⁸ who smote⁵²²¹ them, and chased⁷²⁹¹ them unto great⁷²²⁷ Zidon,⁶⁷²¹ and unto Misrephothmaim,⁴⁹⁵⁶ and unto the valley¹²³⁷ of Mizpeh⁴⁷⁰⁸ eastward;⁴²¹⁷ and they smote⁵²²¹ them, until they left⁷⁶⁰⁴ them none remaining.

⁹ And Joshua³⁰⁹¹ did⁶²¹³ unto them as the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ bade⁵⁵⁹ him: he houghed⁶¹³¹ their horses,⁵⁴⁸³ and burnt⁸³¹³ their chariots⁴⁸¹⁸ with fire.

¹⁰ And Joshua³⁰⁹¹ at that time⁶²⁵⁶ turned back,⁷⁷²⁵ and took³⁹²⁰ Hazor,²⁶⁷⁴ and smote⁵²²¹ the king⁴⁴²⁸ thereof with the sword:²⁷¹⁹ for Hazor²⁶⁷⁴ beforetime⁶⁴⁴⁰ was the head⁷²¹⁸ of all those kingdoms.

¹¹ And they smote⁵²²¹ all the souls⁵³¹⁵ that were therein with the edge⁶³¹⁰ of the sword,²⁷¹⁹ utterly destroying²⁷⁶³ them: there was not any left³⁴⁹⁸ to breathe:⁵³⁹⁷ and he burnt⁸³¹³ Hazor²⁶⁷⁴ with fire.

¹² And all the cities⁵⁸⁹² of those kings,⁴⁴²⁸ and all the kings⁴⁴²⁸ of them, did Joshua³⁰⁹¹ take,³⁹²⁰ and smote⁵²²¹ them with the edge⁶³¹⁰ of the sword,²⁷¹⁹ and he utterly destroyed²⁷⁶³ them, as Moses⁴⁸⁷² the servant⁵⁶⁵⁰ of the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ commanded.

¹³ But as for the cities⁵⁸⁹² that stood⁵⁹⁷⁵ still in their strength,⁸⁵¹⁰ Israel³⁴⁷⁸ burned⁸³¹³ none of them, save²¹⁰⁸ Hazor²⁶⁷⁴ only; that did Joshua³⁰⁹¹ burn.

¹⁴ And all the spoil⁷⁹⁹⁸ of these cities,⁵⁸⁹² and the cattle,⁹²⁹ the children¹¹²¹ of Israel³⁴⁷⁸ took for a prey⁹⁶² unto themselves; but every man¹²⁰ they smote⁵²²¹ with the edge⁶³¹⁰ of the sword,²⁷¹⁹ until they had destroyed⁸⁰⁴⁵ them, neither left⁷⁶⁰⁴ they any to breathe.

¹⁵ As the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ commanded⁶⁶⁸⁰ Moses⁴⁸⁷² his servant,⁵⁶⁵⁰ so did Moses⁴⁸⁷² command⁶⁶⁸⁰ Joshua,³⁰⁹¹ and so did⁶²¹³ Joshua;³⁰⁹¹ he left⁵⁴⁹³ nothing¹⁶⁹⁷ undone⁵⁴⁹³ of all that the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ commanded⁶⁶⁸⁰ Moses.

¹⁶ So Joshua³⁰⁹¹ took³⁹⁴⁷ all that land,⁷⁷⁶ the hills,²⁰²² and all the south country,⁵⁰⁴⁵ and all the land⁷⁷⁶ of Goshen,¹⁶⁵⁷ and the valley,⁸²¹⁹ and the plain,⁶¹⁶⁰ and the mountain²⁰²² of Israel,³⁴⁷⁸ and the valley

¹⁷ Even from the mount²⁰²² Halak,²⁵¹⁰ that goeth up⁵⁹²⁷ to Seir,⁸¹⁶⁵ even unto Baalgad¹¹⁷¹ in the valley¹²³⁷ of Lebanon³⁸⁴⁴ under mount²⁰²² Hermon:²⁷⁶⁸ and all their kings⁴⁴²⁸ he took,³⁹²⁰ and smote⁵²²¹ them, and slew

¹⁸ Joshua³⁰⁹¹ made⁶²¹³ war⁴⁴²¹ a long⁷²²⁷ time³¹¹⁷ with all those kings.

¹⁹ There was not a city⁵⁸⁹² that made peace⁷⁹⁹⁹ with the children¹¹²¹ of Israel,³⁴⁷⁸ save the Hivites²³⁴⁰ the inhabitants³⁴²⁷ of Gibeon:¹³⁹¹ all other they took³⁹⁴⁷ in battle.

²⁰ For it was of the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ to harden²³⁸⁸ their hearts,³⁸²⁰ that they should come against⁷¹²⁵ Israel³⁴⁷⁸ in battle,⁴⁴²¹ that he might destroy them utterly,²⁷⁶³ and that they might have no favour,⁸⁴⁶⁷ but that he might destroy⁸⁰⁴⁵ them, as the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ commanded⁶⁶⁸⁰ Moses.

²¹ And at that time⁶²⁵⁶ came⁹³⁵ Joshua,³⁰⁹¹ and cut off³⁷⁷² the Anakims⁶⁰⁶² from the mountains,²⁰²² from Hebron,²²⁷⁵ from Debir,¹⁶⁸⁸ from Anab,⁶⁰²⁴ and from all the mountains²⁰²² of Judah,³⁰⁶³ and from all the mountains²⁰²² of Israel:³⁴⁷⁸ Joshua³⁰⁹¹ destroyed them utterly²⁷⁶³ with their cities.

²² There was none of the Anakims⁶⁰⁶² left³⁴⁹⁸ in the land⁷⁷⁶ of the children¹¹²¹ of Israel:³⁴⁷⁸ only in Gaza,⁵⁸⁰⁴ in Gath,¹⁶⁶¹ and in Ashdod,⁷⁹⁵ there remained.

^23C So Joshua³⁰⁹¹ took³⁹⁴⁷ the whole land,⁷⁷⁶ according to all that the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ said¹⁶⁹⁶ unto Moses;⁴⁸⁷² and Joshua³⁰⁹¹ gave⁵⁴¹⁴ it for an inheritance⁵¹⁵⁹ unto Israel³⁴⁷⁸ according to their divisions⁴²⁵⁶ by their tribes.⁷⁶²⁶ And the land⁷⁷⁶ rested⁸²⁵² from war.

12Now these are the kings⁴⁴²⁸ of the land,⁷⁷⁶ which the children¹¹²¹ of Israel³⁴⁷⁸ smote,⁵²²¹ and possessed³⁴²³ their land⁷⁷⁶ on the other side⁵⁶⁷⁶ Jordan³³⁸³ toward the rising⁴²¹⁷ of the sun,⁸¹²¹ from the river⁵¹⁵⁸ Arnon⁷⁶⁹ unto mount²⁰²² Hermon,²⁷⁶⁸ and all the plain⁶¹⁶⁰ on the east:

² Sihon⁵⁵¹¹ king⁴⁴²⁸ of the Amorites,⁵⁶⁷ who dwelt³⁴²⁷ in Heshbon,²⁸⁰⁹ and ruled⁴⁹¹⁰ from Aroer,⁶¹⁷⁷ which is upon the bank⁸¹⁹³ of the river⁵¹⁵⁸ Arnon,⁷⁶⁹ and from the middle⁸⁴³² of the river,⁵¹⁵⁸ and from half²⁶⁷⁷ Gilead,¹⁵⁶⁸ even unto the river⁵¹⁵⁸ Jabbok,²⁹⁹⁹ which is the border¹³⁶⁶ of the children¹¹²¹ of Ammon;

³ And from the plain⁶¹⁶⁰ to the sea³²²⁰ of Chinneroth³⁶⁷² on the east,⁴²¹⁷ and unto the sea³²²⁰ of the plain,⁶¹⁶⁰ even the salt⁴⁴¹⁷ sea³²²⁰ on the east,⁴²¹⁷ the way¹⁸⁷⁰ to Bethjeshimoth;¹⁰²⁰ and from the south,⁸⁴⁸⁶ under Ashdothpisgah:⁷⁹⁸

⁴ And the coast¹³⁶⁶ of Og⁵⁷⁴⁷ king⁴⁴²⁸ of Bashan,¹³¹⁶ which was of the remnant³⁴⁹⁹ of the giants,⁷⁴⁹⁷ that dwelt³⁴²⁷ at Ashtaroth⁶²⁵² and at Edrei,

⁵ And reigned⁴⁹¹⁰ in mount²⁰²² Hermon,²⁷⁶⁸ and in Salcah,⁵⁵⁴⁸ and in all Bashan,¹³¹⁶ unto the border¹³⁶⁶ of the Geshurites¹⁶⁵¹ and the Maachathites,⁴⁶⁰² and half²⁶⁷⁷ Gilead,¹⁵⁶⁸ the border¹³⁶⁶ of Sihon⁵⁵¹¹ king⁴⁴²⁸ of Heshbon.

⁶ Them did Moses⁴⁸⁷² the servant⁵⁶⁵⁰ of the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ and the children¹¹²¹ of Israel³⁴⁷⁸ smite:⁵²²¹ and Moses⁴⁸⁷² the servant⁵⁶⁵⁰ of the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ gave⁵⁴¹⁴ it for a possession³⁴²⁵ unto the Reubenites,⁷²⁰⁶ and the Gadites,¹⁴²⁵ and the half²⁶⁷⁷ tribe⁷⁶²⁶ of Manasseh.

⁷ And these are the kings⁴⁴²⁸ of the country⁷⁷⁶ which Joshua³⁰⁹¹ and the children¹¹²¹ of Israel³⁴⁷⁸ smote⁵²²¹ on this side⁵⁶⁷⁶ Jordan³³⁸³ on the west,³²²⁰ from Baalgad¹¹⁷¹ in the valley¹²³⁷ of Lebanon³⁸⁴⁴ even unto the mount²⁰²² Halak,²⁵¹⁰ that goeth up⁵⁹²⁷ to Seir;⁸¹⁶⁵ which Joshua³⁰⁹¹ gave⁵⁴¹⁴ unto the tribes⁷⁶²⁶ of Israel³⁴⁷⁸ for a possession³⁴²⁵ according to their divisions;

⁸ In the mountains,²⁰²² and in the valleys,⁸²¹⁹ and in the plains,⁶¹⁶⁰ and in the springs,⁷⁹⁴ and in the wilderness,⁴⁰⁵⁷ and in the south country;⁵⁰⁴⁵ the Hittites,²⁸⁵⁰ the Amorites,⁵⁶⁷ and the Canaanites,³⁶⁶⁹ the Perizzites,⁶⁵²² the Hivites,²³⁴⁰ and the Jebusites:

⁹ The king⁴⁴²⁸ of Jericho,³⁴⁰⁵ one;²⁵⁹ the king⁴⁴²⁸ of Ai,⁵⁸⁵⁷ which is beside⁶⁶⁵⁴ Bethel,¹⁰⁰⁸ one;

¹⁰ The king⁴⁴²⁸ of Jerusalem,³³⁸⁹ one;²⁵⁹ the king⁴⁴²⁸ of Hebron,²²⁷⁵ one;

¹¹ The king⁴⁴²⁸ of Jarmuth,³⁴¹² one;²⁵⁹ the king⁴⁴²⁸ of Lachish,³⁹²³ one;

¹² The king⁴⁴²⁸ of Eglon,⁵⁷⁰⁰ one;²⁵⁹ the king⁴⁴²⁸ of Gezer,¹⁵⁰⁷ one;

¹³ The king⁴⁴²⁸ of Debir,¹⁶⁸⁸ one;²⁵⁹ the king⁴⁴²⁸ of Geder,¹⁴⁴⁵ one;

¹⁴ The king⁴⁴²⁸ of Hormah,²⁷⁶⁷ one;²⁵⁹ the king⁴⁴²⁸ of Arad,⁶¹⁶⁶ one;

¹⁵ The king⁴⁴²⁸ of Libnah,³⁸⁴¹ one;²⁵⁹ the king⁴⁴²⁸ of Adullam,⁵⁷²⁵ one;

¹⁶ The king⁴⁴²⁸ of Makkedah,⁴⁷¹⁹ one;²⁵⁹ the king⁴⁴²⁸ of Bethel,¹⁰⁰⁸ one;

¹⁷ The king⁴⁴²⁸ of Tappuah,⁸⁵⁹⁹ one;²⁵⁹ the king⁴⁴²⁸ of Hepher,²⁶⁶⁰ one;

¹⁸ The king⁴⁴²⁸ of Aphek,⁶⁶³ one;²⁵⁹ the king⁴⁴²⁸ of Lasharon,⁸²⁸⁹ one;

¹⁹ The king⁴⁴²⁸ of Madon,⁴⁰⁶⁸ one;²⁵⁹ the king⁴⁴²⁸ of Hazor,²⁶⁷⁴ one;

²⁰ The king⁴⁴²⁸ of Shimronmeron,⁸¹¹² one;²⁵⁹ the king⁴⁴²⁸ of Achshaph,⁴⁰⁷ one;

²¹ The king⁴⁴²⁸ of Taanach,⁸⁵⁹⁰ one;²⁵⁹ the king⁴⁴²⁸ of Megiddo,⁴⁰²³ one;

²² The king⁴⁴²⁸ of Kedesh,⁶⁹⁴³ one;²⁵⁹ the king⁴⁴²⁸ of Jokneam³³⁶² of Carmel,³⁷⁶⁰ one;

²³ The king⁴⁴²⁸ of Dor¹⁷⁵⁶ in the coast⁵²⁹⁹ of Dor,¹⁷⁵⁶ one;²⁵⁹ the king⁴⁴²⁸ of the nations¹⁴⁷¹ of Gilgal,¹⁵³⁷ one;

²⁴ The king⁴⁴²⁸ of Tirzah,⁸⁶⁵⁶ one:²⁵⁹ all the kings⁴⁴²⁸ thirty⁷⁹⁷⁰ and one.

13Now Joshua³⁰⁹¹ was old²²⁰⁴ and stricken⁹³⁵ in years;³¹¹⁷ and the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ said⁵⁵⁹ unto him, Thou art old²²⁰⁴ and stricken⁹³⁵ in years,³¹¹⁷ and there remaineth⁷⁶⁰⁴ yet very³⁹⁶⁶ much⁷²³⁵ land⁷⁷⁶ to be possessed.
